97X Panama City

Is WTKP still off the air? Is so, sports would have been cool. And since they flipped at Spring Break, stunting with EDM might have caught some ears.

How long has it been since PCB had Classic Country? I'm not talking about WDJR 96.9 The Legend's flavor of county... I'm looking for WAAZ quality Good Country. The Legend's playlist is just weird.

What's the Country bar/club on PCB now-a-days?

I don't recall a Classic Country-style format since "sort of" (maybe) one in the mid-80's on, IIRC 94.5 maybe before they went to T-94 maybe? (Man, I damn honestly recall) I do think JW has kinda been the only true country FM station in the Panhandle, vs. the more modern approaches. CCENG will know. Will let ya know if he doesn't first. Perhaps there is or was a classic style country station to the East, like one of the old Oyster stations, but nothing in PCB or FWB/Destin on the FM.

Actually Panama City has had an actual all-EDM station for three years now, 93-9 PLAY FM (AM 1290 WPCF + W230CA 93.9 FM). PLAY FM is owned/programmed by Patrick Pfeffer (the owner of Club LaVela & EDM fan himself). This station is VERY well programmed - music is spot on, the imaging is some of the best I've heard in years. Super impressive for just 90 watts. I think it even got a 0.8 share 12+ in the Panama City book (not saying that's good but for a translator playing EDM in market 235 (?) that's pretty good).

I'm familiar with Totally Patrick's station. LaVela prints money and air time on 100.1 is cheap. Patrick should have leased 100.1 for the month and simulcast Play or run a separate LaVela Radio format.

I guess the fact that 100.1 didn't go with a special Spring Break format is a sign that the 16-25 year old kids on PCB don't listen to radio anymore.

Is that why all the Birmingham high school kids are in Orange Beach?

Orange Beach and Gulf Shores have also banned drinking on the beach, so I would think most of the older ones would go elsewhere. Padre Island or Cancun, whatever the kiddies think is hot this year.

But yeah, it's still a big draw for southern high schoolers. I haven't actually seen many yet, to be honest. Baldwin and Mobile Counties are out this week so it'll be slammed down there for sure. I was in OB at the Publix a few hours ago and it was mostly families with really young kids and a few intrepid college kids that seemed a bit less "party hearty" in their attitude.

That said, OB still arrested something like 48 people for violating the drinking rules on the beach just last week, the first of Spring Break.

Circling back to radio for a moment, I've often wondered if the yuge Spring Break crowds that PCB saw in its heyday affected radio ad sales at all in that market. At least prior to the era of smartphones (and stupid people), if you wanted tunes on the beach or in the car you had to have the radio on. I'm sure it was a little boost in listenership, even if the ratings never reflected it.

I'm absolutely sure it was significant. Tibbs and Wooten were there in the heydays... they probably have lovely stories they aren't willing to share in mixed company. Tibbs is already on this board. Someone needs to lure Wooten over from Radioinsight.

First off, great to see Brian Holmes back on here. I agree with you on the Play FM. When I last heard it, think it was a few weeks after the launch, I didn't recall hearing any commercials. I would think it would make sense to help cover the cost to run it. There were many GREAT stories. It was a magical time. A handful of Robert Palmer songs just went on the Spring playlist at Hippie Radio. That officially marks me "semi start" feeling old. 31 years ago? Really? Seems like yesterday. Not sure "West End Girls" will make it on. That one may be just a tad unHippie-ish. I will yell at Wooten tonight to get back on. I thought I mentioned it a few weeks ago. I think it is a logging in issue. Oh, and IIRC correctly, yep, Spring was pretty much Christmas back then. You sold it in December and January to flourish in March and April. The dumba$$es have ruined Spring Break and the school systems have screwed up the typical Memorial Day to Labor Day summer breaks. I would think that it has been a tough two years down on the beaches.

Poledo - have you listened to 99.3 in the last 24 hours? May not be able to get it that far west. CCENG says he will chime in tonight. The board is alive with the sound of....

99.3? The PCB Rap station? I'm too close to 99Rock to listen to it, but I can tell it is on the air.
I even picked up WYYX 97X which is hard this close to WABD 97.5.

Come on Tibbs. Give us some 1980 PCB radio stories involving record companies showing up with stacks of cash, strippers and blow for a party with the music director and top DJs! Free beer and liquor at work. Wanna judge a wet t-shirt competition? Give us something!

Strangely enough 99.3 is a regular tropo catch over here in Baldwin County. It's either that or WMFC's oldies from Monroeville. WKGC, WFLF, WFSY, WYOO, WKNK, WASJ and WPFM are also regular when the winds are blowing right. Of course the most reliable catch of all isn't exactly a PC station even though I'm sure it can be picked up there: WDJR. I swear I hear it 4 out of 5 nights when conditions are favorable.

Just a heads up to those of you talking about 99.3 - within the last 10 days they flipped to R&B throwbacks. Aretha, Digital Underground, En Vouge, Zapp & Roger, Prince, Spinners, Michael Jackson, Sugarhill Gang, Teddy Pendergrass. But there ARE a few currents here and there - I saw the latest Bruno Mars and the Childish Gambino and The Weeknd tracks played also.

Thanks Tibbs! I'm always reading this board, just not always the time to respond. Yeah for the longest time, the only spots on PLAY-FM were for LaVela, just stopping for just 60 seconds an hour. The imaging did a great job of positioning them as "the station playing the most music" and the ONLY station playing the music they play. In the last year, other clients have hopped on board like Pepsi, Alvins Island, Show N Tail, etc.

He's done all that before. Why would he buy time on 100.1? The groovin oldies/rock/classic country formats it's had don't reflect EDM. He's had live broadcasts on Island & HOT 107.9 - but the music broadcast still didn't reflect EDM. He had his own EDM show on Island for a while - programmed by him (not sure if he was buying that time or not). Patrick is extremely passionate about dance/electronic music, as am I. I guarantee he was tired of paying to be the red headed stepchild for an hour or two a week, etc. Electronic/Dance music was being treated as "just a Spring Break thing" or "a Patrick/LaVela thing". So he bought the 93.9 signal so he could program the format the right way and on a consistent basis 24/7/365. For a translator in market #230, it sounds excellent. The music/imaging/production value are major market sounding for that format.

Looks like PCB is basically a Spring Break war zone. Poledo - our generation came to the beach to make love. not war. Back in "those daze" WPFM and WILN made a decent amount of money off the bar war ads and remotes. Club La Vela and Spinnaker would spend tons of money and other bars would "try." That is why you had so many attempts at Top 40/CHR/Rock stations. Now look at it! I think Patrick has done a pretty smart thing. It has allowed him to not be completely prostituted by the other stations. Now the stations geared toward them youngsters are having issues. Look at what just happened with a top rated station, The Beat! They could not sell it. Something is not right. It needs to be fixed quickly.

Watch LivePD on A&E to see how they're treating those poor spring breakers down on 30A.
When they took away the booze in PCB they forgot to ban guns.
The era is over. Good thing I'm old now.
