American Idol on ABC?

http://deadline.com/2017/05/american-idol-reboot-abc-talks-ryan-seacrest-1202084481/

Interesting move here and this apparently NBC is holding the contract with Simon Cowell and Jennifer Lopez in another link.

NBC holds two major pieces of the Idol legacy — it has deals with original Idol judge Simon Cowell and one of the judges from Idol’s final seasons, Jennifer Lopez.

Meanwhile, ABC has in the extended corporate family Idol host Ryan Seacrest, who just was named co-host and executive producer of the syndicated Live & Kelly & Ryan, produced by WABC-TV and distributed by Disney/ABC. I hear Seacrest, who is now based in New York, has not been formally approached yet about possible involvement in the proposed Idol revival. He is currently focused on Live and his daily radio show though he has expressed publicly his affection for the TV show that made him a star, so he would likely be open to it, sources say.

Weird not seeing American Idol on TV this winter watched American Idol from season until it's last season so I'll watch Idol again if it's a go next year.

The concept of this show is generally good. It probably needed a rest for a season or two, so bringing it back is not surprising. Hosts and judges ARE important, moreso than even the contestants. This is an ongoing story, but I expect the show will be back on the air on a major network, but likely not Fox.

If Seacrest is confirmed to go to Idol again that means he would have to do both Live with Kelly Ripa and his Iheartradio/ KIIS-FM show on the road for audition phases.

if American Idol does get rebooted on ABC, they better get a new logo to prove it's a new era.

If people were tired of American Idol and had stopped watching, a spiffy new logo isn't going to get them to return. I may be underestimating the gullibility of the average American, though.

"executive producer"??? But they didn't have enough money to keep Regis or Michael when they were on???

The subplot to get Ryan under the Disney/ABC umbrella in order to get AI may have backfired.

When AGT came to NYC for Stern, did that appreciably help the show?

Looks like Ryan isn't going to be host Idol can't blame him would be too much even for the hardest working man on TV Ryan has his limits.

Over the wknd, TMZ reported that Freemantle has pulled back on their insistence that the show be done in LA, allowing it to be produced in New York, and making it possible for Ryan to host.

That makes me think Disney had this planned out. It didn't make sense to have Seacrest with Kelly, but now it makes sense.

Update on the Idol on ABC talks

The saga of getting American Idol back on TV is over, with ABC officially closing a deal with FremantleMedia North America and CORE Media Group’s 19 Entertainment for a revival of the singing competition series. The network just announced that American Idol will return for the 2017-2018 season, two seasons after the series ended its 15-season run on Fox in April 2016. A host and judges will be announced at a later time. Idol producers FMNA and CMG/19 Entertainment and creator Simon Fuller started talking about a new installment even before the series had wrapped its final season in April 2016. There were feelers sent out last summer, and Fox, which had a first negotiation right, was pitched. I hear the producers back then offered the same format for the show at the high price point at the end of its run, making it a tough proposition for the network, which felt it was too soon to bring Idol back without significant reinvention. Next, there were on-and-off conversations with ABC. NBC then engaged in negotiations with the production companies about reviving Idol, and Fox soon jumped back into the fray. Then recently, in the run-up to a potential writers strike, ABC engaged FMNA and CMG. The two sides were near the finish line when Fox came back with a serious offer, but the deal ultimately closed at ABC.

We hear Seacrest, who is now based in New York, had not been part of the Idol negotiations and had not been formally approached about possible involvement in the proposed Idol revival before the deal was made. He is currently focused on Live and his daily radio show, but has expressed publicly his affection for the TV show that made him a star, so he would likely be open to it if scheduling permits.
