Exclusive: Sinclair approaches Tribune Media about possible deal - sources

[O'Reilly would] likely have the widest clearance on the larger Sinclair and could return to prime time cable on WGN. Newsmax doesn't have the clearance to match that, neither does America One. I think he wants to stick it to Fox, and returning to Prime Time on cable would be the best way to do that.

I think you meant One America News Network (OANN). America One is a defunct network that merged with Youtoo TV (now Youtoo America).

I did mean One America, JayR. Thank you for catching and correcting that.

As to the Post article, it failed to note that the stations Sinclair acquires would still, for those having network affiliations, carry the network news programs that have a clear left leaning bias. The Sinclair-Tribune deal will allow the cash strapped Tribune stations to have a much better financial backing. If Tribune is forced to continue on its own, some stations may simply go dark. If the Post is so concerned about this, why not have their main benefactor, Jeff Bezos, put in a bid for Tribune? I doubt he would want to do so.

"Clear left leaning bias?" Really? When did Rachel Madow start anchoring NBC News? These are the same network news shows that reported Obama's ties to the radical minister and Clinton's email scandal. They're not as "left leaning" as you think.

If the Post is so concerned about this, why not have their main benefactor, Jeff Bezos, put in a bid for Tribune?

Bezos isn't a benefactor. He's the owner. Big difference. Bezos doesn't get involved in editorial decisions. Just because they report it doesn't mean they're personally involved. They have reported on similar media purchases with the same critical eye, including when Bezos bought the Post.

I don't get why the hiring of Boris Epshteyn is so controversial. CNN hired Jim Sciutto as a reporter who was an Obama appointee while he was still in office and there was no controversy, George Stephanopoulos is ABC's lead anchor and he work for Bill Clinton. Epshteyn isn't the first person that worked for a politician then worked in news and he won't be the last one either.

I don't think anyone says it is. They just don't agree with what he says.

There are several former Trump aids working at the various news channels. He's not the only one. But he was Bill Maher's guest, and Bill is an entertainer.

Update Sinclair and Senate possible meeting

Sinclair Broadcast Group has responded to a request from Senate Democrats for a hearing on its proposed merger with Tribune Media.

That comes in the wake of a letter from those Democrats to Senate Commerce Committee chairman John Thune (R-S.D.) and Judiciary Committee chairman Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) seeking the hearing on the deal, and on an associated FCC decision that would help clear the way for it.

In response to the news that the request had been made, Sinclair senior VP of strategy and policy Rebecca Hanson said: “We appreciate the senators’ interest in this important transaction and look forward to working with policymakers to discuss the significant benefits this deal will provide for local viewers and communities across the country."

The deal hinges on whether the FCC's decision to reinstate the UHF discount stands. That reinstatement has been challenged in court by anti-consolidation activists concerned about Sinclair’s Tribune acquistion and other potential deals.

But Sinclair argues that boosting its station totals is an attempt to keep up with the size and scale of competitors without similar ownership limits. "At a time of rapidly accelerating competition from the nation’s largest cable, satellite, wireless and internet companies, the combined Sinclair-Tribune will have the wherewithal to compete through innovation, including the roll out of ‘Next Gen’ television and enhanced investment in local news and original programming," Hanson said.

Not surprise the stay wasn't granted by the courts which the groups that wanted the stay will lose in the courts I believe there complaints are without merit.

Tribune Media Co., set to be acquired by Sinclair Broadcast Group, said that Matt Cherniss has decided to step down from his posts as president and general manager of WGN America and Tribune Studios, effective at the end of the month.

Cherniss has held those posts at Tribune since 2013.

Cable industry veteran Gavin Harvey has been named to serve as interim president of WGN America.

Under Cherniss, WGN America aired several well-regarded shows including Underground. The network is likely to change direction under Sinclair.

“We are grateful to Matt for his leadership, and creative vision in transforming WGN America,” said Tribune Media CEO Peter Kern. “He’s had a tremendous impact on the company, and we thank him for his significant contributions.”

Harvey has served in executive roles with networks such as E! and FX and leading Versus, Fuse and Sportsman’s Channel through significant growth periods.

Here is it.

I fear that WNEP may have a "1996 WPVI theme" moment, only this time it may be permanent, once Sinclair manages to get WNEP, if they do (because NEPA is a mess, when it comes to mergers). However, if WNEP gets sold to another owner, Channel 16 may be able to keep it's current theme, or in a slim chance, bring back the original MCTYW theme.

Sinclair probably won't even care how many people oppose the theme change, even if it's by a majority. The people would rather have the current "MCTYW-esque" theme than Sinclair's news theme.

I said they may have a "1996 WPVI theme" moment, because they've been using the legendary Move Closer To Your World (of sorts) since 1979 (modern version since 1994), according to SouthernMedia NMSA, even though for one moment they used "PM:High Combustion", and seeing them ditch MCTYW would make some viewers angry, like what happened to Philly in 1996, when WPVI ditched their theme for only a few days, with another MCTYW-esque theme that sounded bad.

From TVnewscheck looks like Sinclair will be divesting 10 stations which doesn't surprise me any thought it be more than just 3 stations. Looks like Sinclair will not be shelling WXMI which I thought they would be a de facto Sinclair station happy it isn't and will sell it. Which I knew that they would keep the higher profile channel WWMT over Fox17 I think Gray, Scripps, Meredith maybe getting into the West Michigan market surprise that Hearst that own any Fox stations in the country I would think they would want to get into this market. Maybe they'll wait if WZZM is on the block if Nexstar buys TEGNA.
