[O'Reilly would] likely have the widest clearance on the larger Sinclair and could return to prime time cable on WGN. Newsmax doesn't have the clearance to match that, neither does America One. I think he wants to stick it to Fox, and returning to Prime Time on cable would be the best way to do that.
As to the Post article, it failed to note that the stations Sinclair acquires would still, for those having network affiliations, carry the network news programs that have a clear left leaning bias.
If the Post is so concerned about this, why not have their main benefactor, Jeff Bezos, put in a bid for Tribune?
I don't get why the hiring of Boris Epshteyn is so controversial.
Sinclair Broadcast Group has responded to a request from Senate Democrats for a hearing on its proposed merger with Tribune Media.
That comes in the wake of a letter from those Democrats to Senate Commerce Committee chairman John Thune (R-S.D.) and Judiciary Committee chairman Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) seeking the hearing on the deal, and on an associated FCC decision that would help clear the way for it.
In response to the news that the request had been made, Sinclair senior VP of strategy and policy Rebecca Hanson said: “We appreciate the senators’ interest in this important transaction and look forward to working with policymakers to discuss the significant benefits this deal will provide for local viewers and communities across the country."
The deal hinges on whether the FCC's decision to reinstate the UHF discount stands. That reinstatement has been challenged in court by anti-consolidation activists concerned about Sinclair’s Tribune acquistion and other potential deals.
But Sinclair argues that boosting its station totals is an attempt to keep up with the size and scale of competitors without similar ownership limits. "At a time of rapidly accelerating competition from the nation’s largest cable, satellite, wireless and internet companies, the combined Sinclair-Tribune will have the wherewithal to compete through innovation, including the roll out of ‘Next Gen’ television and enhanced investment in local news and original programming," Hanson said.
Tribune Media Co., set to be acquired by Sinclair Broadcast Group, said that Matt Cherniss has decided to step down from his posts as president and general manager of WGN America and Tribune Studios, effective at the end of the month.
Cherniss has held those posts at Tribune since 2013.
Cable industry veteran Gavin Harvey has been named to serve as interim president of WGN America.
Under Cherniss, WGN America aired several well-regarded shows including Underground. The network is likely to change direction under Sinclair.
“We are grateful to Matt for his leadership, and creative vision in transforming WGN America,” said Tribune Media CEO Peter Kern. “He’s had a tremendous impact on the company, and we thank him for his significant contributions.”
Harvey has served in executive roles with networks such as E! and FX and leading Versus, Fuse and Sportsman’s Channel through significant growth periods.
