WMEX?

Michael Savage is now on 3:00 - 6:00. Not sure for how long.

It's just for today, mcscreamer will be back tomorrow and Friday.....Friday for her last show.....woooot wooooot! I'm guessing they will continue to air Savage live in that time slot.....they continue to do a replay of Renegade Radio in the 10 to 12 slot, used to be shortsleeve's slot, perhaps they are holding that slot for him in case he loses Timilty's seat.

1510AM Swan song.

So....who exactly are these current owners of WMEX that came into town and thought they could run and program a station in a major market?

They are from Vermont and Connecticut? They came in and ran the place like a small town radio station, and didn't learn rule one of programming...consistency!

Who actually thought that they could get any serious traction with that morning show? Who thought that those two nitwits could actually do a major-market morning show?

They bought the station for a song ($175k?) and still couldn't make a go of it!

(Afterthought...bouncing around who might be interested in it....HeraldRadio? $175k is not a lot of debt to service...and could probably use Herald infrastructure to actually put some advertising on it.)

Even if the Herald took it on as a vanity project, and assuming the Herald is not exactly swimming in money as the newspaper industry is going the way of the blacksmith..... and they could get it for short money, moving the main studio to Fargo Street, there is still that pesky issue of the transmitter site, which is rumored to be a huge expense.

Nobody on the last 30 years has been able to make that station viable in the market, and with AM signals being hampered by increasing levels of interference, it isn't going to get any better.

So unless someone has a grand plan to move the transmitter, or get a translator ( in this market !) 1510 is a station that has no bright future.... How do you make it break even?

Ah, the transmitter site, the oft mentioned, never quantified issue. (No one quite knows what the cost is).

However, just to bring this hypothetical one step further if the Herald stepped in. programming costs are covered. rest/lease space is covered. current ad-sales infrastructure is in place at the Herald.

All they would have to do is service debt on the sale price (last price $175k....@5% =$8,750...not much.)

Now to come up with enough revenue to cover the transmitter lease, etc.

Sounds doable to me......if they have the interest.

Again, just a hypothetical to make it interesting.

Otherwise, someone will pick it up and try leased-time, I'm sure.

Howie could buy it with one-day's sales of t-shirts from his store.

It is McPhee's last show. She's making it sound like
other hosts will also be heading elsewhere soon.
Sandy says she's back Mon. Supposedly they may be
on till 15th or so.

Caught her last 10 minutes, ZZZZzzzzz

She says she is headed to Italy for a month....

Well as McScreech heads off into the sunset, we have lost a good part of our topic database.

I guess the only thing left is to pick Daly XXL in Howie's Death Pool.

Renegade Radio and "Sandy" said they'd be back on Monday..."Sandy" said something about scheduling changes? She may be referring to probably Savage taking over the 3 to 7 slot live from now on....IIRC Renegade said the other day that they now have a contract...they've been working without one since December....both Renegade and "Sandy" said not to believe everything you've heard about what's going on over there. Renegade will be at F1 Braintree on the 15th and they also plan to have a "tell all" broadcast possibly as soon as next week where you can ask any question about anything going on at the station and they will answer honestly. I know that they are thrilled to death that mcscreamer is gone, they couldn't contain themselves yesterday morning!

Just got word from a source that hosts and emplyees of WMEX got a notice over the weekend that the station is in the process of being sold.

If the current owners get more than $175k for it, they will have made a profit!

175k plus whatever they put in after the sale to get it running or keep it running, and whatever they owe themselves

but that sale had to be the worst kept secret in Boston

...but that sale had to be the worst kept secret in Boston

A sale...rather than receivership...or the thought of them dumping the expenditure on staff and programming, holding onto it and doing foreign language brokered time.

We all knew they were in trouble....but I honestly doubted that they would find someone who would actually want to buy it.

Since they announced it to the staff....it means they have a (ready and willing) buyer.

Now...who could that be?

;-)

and in Scott Fybush's NERW today, a mention that 10 years ago today Blackstrap bought 1510 and another station for something north of TWENTY MILLION DOLLARS.

and 8 years later Daly XXL got it for 175 Grand.... and 2 years later they are dumping it to a yet to be named party....

Transmitter lease expires at end of month; new owners will have to either renegotiate/renew or find a new site. Possibly go silent for awhile.

IMHO without a lease in place for the transmitter site, the station is worth the scrap value of the equipment ( because you can not depreciate an asset below scrap value) and that would be more than it is worth to me.

Building a new antenna structure inside 495 is not a possibility, so where could they go that is affordable, technically feasible, and covers the C.O.L. ?

S.T.A. for a long wire antenna strung between 2 trees in Quincy?
