The James Comey congressional hearing

And following each and every long, drawn out day of testimony the evening news programs and most likely the Sunday news magazines will provide their own long, drawn out versions of what it all means (in the event the average American can't understand political double speak).

Overkill, as usual.

Overkill with all that fake news...

enough already kenrayc, we all know you voted for Trump in the election and you are a bleeding heart conservative.

and yes, this is a huge news story related to one of the biggest, if the the biggest presidential scandal since Watergate and the whole Clinton/Lewinsky affair scandal.

This stuff all keeps up, we can go back to rotating coverage, like the Watergate hearings.

I don't remember "rotating coverage" of the Watergate hearings, but then again I was only 14 years old. I just remember the networks covered a lot of it during daytime. I also remember many complained about their "soaps" not being on! A different era.

The fact that the big 3 will be on this is somewhat telling, though. This is indeed a pivotal moment.

For the first month or so, all 3 networks aired the hearings simultaneously. When it was determined that they were going to be around for awhile, they decided to alternate coverage, one network per day.

Back in 1973, the networks had full daytime schedules, with lots of soap operas and game shows. IIRC, it was the soaps' viewers that protested enough to get the networks to go to the every-third-day coverage.

As it stands, we're talking, what, one day of coverage on the broadcast networks (live coverage that is). Maybe a few others here and there, but this is no Watergate hearings in scope, realistically. And they may devote a good chunk of time, but still within their allotted 30 minutes--maybe, MAYBE, expanded to an hour on rare occasions--evening news. The same amount of overall time they spend every other day. And on Sunday they'll spend the exact same amount of time they do to political stories every week--we know this is the big story of the week (barring anything else unforeseen).

Agree or disagree with the focus of the hearings, it is significant and newsworthy that they're happening. That warrants news coverage. And on the broadcast networks, replacing--for a day--what? Talk, games and soaps, all of which will be there the next day.

It's not overkill to provide coverage of what has the potential to be a significant story.

I doubt much will be revealed to justify this level of coverage, but it doesn't hurt that the networks are doing this.

rotating coverage for the James Comey hearings? I don't think that could work in todays media landscape mainly because the removed shows by network could be moved to their apps and CBSN app and ABC News app will go wall to wall with the hearings if one does not have OTA affiliate or cable TV.

Note on the West Coast the James Comey Hearings will air right when local TV stations have local news and in some cases right when the national morning shows are on. KABC-TV Los Angeles has just announced that the James Comey Hearing will air at 7am right when Good Morning America is on.

Moreover, there's nothing to rotate. One day and done. (At least presumably.) Now if--purely hypothetical and simply for the sake of discussion--something more happened and we were to ever reach the impeachment hearing stage (be that with the current or a future administration), I would expect daily coverage and no rotation (and that would be perfectly valid).

There's really no need to move any shows. Talk, soaps, game shows--they can all be held (if they're in originals) for the next scheduled day, with repeats airing to fill any gaps in other time zones as needed. It all balances out in the end.

I think a lot of the anticipation was deflated by Comey's release of his prepared statement. Mixed in with a lot of hot air are the points that he did indeed assure the President that he wasn't the target of an investigation and that he (Comey) doesn't believe obstruction of justice occurred. His depiction of the alleged pressure regarding Flynn makes Comey look weak kneed. For many people this is going to validate the President's decision to appoint a new FBI Director.

KTVU+ the Fox O&O is airing the hearings while KTVU Fox 2 (Main Fox O&O) airs the local news in San Francisco.

Apparently Bars in Washington DC and San Francisco had Parties for the Comey Hearings. Wow I thought watch parties were reserved for NBA Finals, Olympics, Super Bowl, World Cup, World Series and the Final Four.

As someone else said, this was a "one and done" situation. No big losses for the networks. As it turns out, this was actually a pretty fascinating hearing. Comey was very communicative and very easy to follow for the common viewer.
