Flipping around the dial, I heard 94.5 Kool playing Shania Twain's 1998 hit "That don't impress me"
What's next? Will Smith's Gettin' Jiggy Wit It? ...Backstreet Boys? Brittany Spears? Coolio?

Uggg I miss the old days when Kool played real oldies, and not cloning 99.9 & 96.9
No surprise more folks are tuning to 92.7. (I must be getting old?...LOL!)

RIP KOOL

They are obviously trying to keep the format from aging, as advertisers don't want older audiences.

Or expressed more colorfully:

KOOL plays dad-rock, not granddad-rock.

And like it or not, these are the songs that someone in their 40's listened to in their misspent youth.

It may not bring back the same memories as to a boomer, but this is my youth, damnit. I've waited half of my life for my childhood to show up on KOOL-FM. Okay, maybe I didn't wait for that.

But when I was 19 or 20 and 5 stations in this town were playing the same crappy Michael Bolton songs chasing the elusive 25-54 and it was damn near impossible to find anything decent that I wanted to listen to, I decided that I would just have to wait until I aged into the demo to force my musical will upon the masses. I'm 46. Hope you like Hungry Like The Wolf. Payback time isn't over yet. This is what the previous generation gets for killing off KZZP for Variety 104.7 and spinning Sister Golden Hair 10 times a day.

My KOOL-FM pre-set has been gone for a long, long time.

Hello KAZG 1440, 92.7 and 93.3 HD2 !!!

Now if they play "Start the Car" from Jude Cole from the movie Aspen Extreme, then it would get interesting. That's a classic from the 90's that won't even get played today on many radio stations

Just like KOOL Listener Lauren, 94~Five has moved on. Even their HD~Too channel is downright disappointing. As far as KLL goes, anyone know her whereabouts? Maybe she moved to Palm Springs just to trample over the Old Gringo's artificial lawn!

KLL reports she is alive and well but no longer a listener of KOOL-FM. She seems to feel about the same as the rest of us regarding their playlist. She is working full time and says as soon as she can remember her log in she will visit the board again. Didn't sound like she was stalking the Old Gringo. :)

Not all of us. I think the playlist today is much better than it used to be. Going back to the mid-90's, I found them with too large a library of secondary hit oldies, and when they tightened up a bit, they took too long to flush the 50's stuff.

I hear too much of the music of my youth on 93.3 - Violent Femmes? I nearly drove my car off the road when I heard that "Blister In The Sun" on 93.3. How old is that song? Was any of their demo even born yet? And Nirvana is still regular rotation? I hope KOOL's suits are taking notes because their next crop of adds will be from 93.3, I can guarantee you.

If KOOL isn't testing Santeria yet, they probably should.

That may be true, however, that doesn't mean that younger people will either want to listen to
or have interest in listening. Radio might well be better off if less attention was paid to advertisers
and more attention paid to actual listeners. That formula has worked for KAHM, EASY LISTENING
in Prescott, AZ for over 35 years..........

Older leaning oldies or classic hits stations have successfully rejuvenated their core audience demos by nuking the older stuff and moving into 80's and even limited 90's songs.

KAHM works in Prescott because that market has very little agency business. Local businesses know that the market leans very old due to the large retiree community and they have no choice but to appeal to that group. Phoenix is the opposite: lots of agency business that seldom buys against 55+ and few local accounts that look for 55+ consumers by using radio.

Commercial radio works on the concept that if you reach an audience advertisers want, you can make money. Ignoring advertisers is a sure formula for failure.

The problem is, when push comes to shove, radio's customers aren't really the listeners. They're the advertisers. Radio helps deliver the advertisers their customers.

It's really the same model Google and the other providers of free services use. If you're not paying for the product, chances are you ARE the product. Listeners are the product radio delivers to its customers.

Pruning the secondary oldies would have meant playing Bang 545 even more often!

Green grass, a stadium, and a brown eyed girl. Worked in '67...still works today!

Having listened to KOOL for decades now, the one thing missing is listener passion over a favorite station. When it was a true Oldies station, listeners were extremely devoted, passionate, and would do just about anything for their beloved 94 point Five. Doesn't seem the same now that KOOL is more Classic Rock with songs from the Dark Ages of just 10 years ago! But times change, and the way the station's audience is measured has changed as well. No denying the fact KOOL performs consistently well in money demos, month after month. So with a deep sigh, the Nurse and I bid adieu to fond memories of the station whose call letters were displayed as blocks of ice...just like movie theaters did to drag people in during hot summer months eons ago. We're ready for the future, but dammit all... you kids better get off our lawn!

Well stated Doc. It is hard to believe but I once turned down a job because it would have meant moving out of the Valley and losing KOOL-FM. It isn't even a backup pre-set any longer.
