Oldest Extant Off-Air VHS/Beta Tape You Have

You've been doing better than I have these last couple of weeks. In the garage sales I visited these last three days, no home-recorded tapes whatsoever! Plenty of retail tapes at several of the sales though. Among those I went to were Chippewa Lake's annual community garage sale, but no luck at all.

Next week is the town of Seville's village-wide yard sale, which is always held the Friday and Saturday before Father's Day. Didn't have nearly as much luck at last year's Seville sales, but found a good amount of stuff in the couple of years beforehand. In 2014, when I first went there, I found about 14 tapes, most of which had commercials, and they were a pretty good mix of content--two hours of 1996 Olympics events, 1988 Olympics coverage plus a late local newscast, 2003 Daytona 500, Star Trek: Voyager two-part episode "The Killing Game," late night aircheck of WEWS from March 1991 including ABC News Weekend Report, some Lifetime movies, some soap operas (One Life to Live and General Hospital), some other movies, etc. Not as many tapes when I went back in 2015, but still some good finds--Cleveland Browns game against Houston Oilers in 1989, some more NASCAR footage, some more soap operas (The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful), etc. Only found two tapes at Seville last year, both of which were duds.

Tape 1 - 'Splash' (1984) taped off unknown pay-TV channel; ends with about 20 minutes of 48 Hours taped off unknown CBS affiliate 1/25/1990 minus commercials (Paul McCartney on Tour)
Tape 2 - Starts with five minutes of Nightly Business Report from 4/5/2000, then cuts to a broadcast of Great Performances taped the same night off KYVE/47 Yakima (Andrew Lloyd Weber special, with Donny Osmond hosting); this is followed by a partial broadcast of Biography taped off A&E 12/19/1999 with commercials (The Unknown Jesus); partial broadcast of Golf Academy Live and an episode of Golf Central taped off Golf Channel in August 1998 with commercials; some coverage of the PGA Championship taped off an unknown CBS station in August 1998 minus commercials; episode of Golf Talk Live taped off Golf Channel in August 1998 minus commercials; ends with a partial Seinfeld rerun taped off KTLA/5 Los Angeles 4/2/1997 with commercials

Big gap of time in finding home recorded stuff as yard sales looked lacking and most thrift stores refuse to stock this stuff, but I grabbed half a dozen in the last few weeks, the labels looked promising, I'll update these as I watch them in real-time...

Tape 1 (1st half):
-This one had Super Bowl XXV on the label, so far it looks like it was recorded over, but it was done in EP so a full 6 hours of stuff I assume. The audio was staticy and muffled, which makes me think it was recorded in mono EP and I'm trying to play it back on a HiFi deck.
March 3, 1992 Happy Days Reunion Special (WABC) complete with commercials
March? 1992 Yankees Video Magazine, I say March because it talks about Spring Training and the Danny Tartabull free agent signing (MSG?)
March 4, 1992 half an episode of Davis Rules (WCBS) rolls on with commercials to the the next show in the block...
March 4, 1992 full episode of Brooklyn Bridge (WCBS) lots of promos for TERRIBLE CBS shows of the period like Tequila & Bonetti, Scorch, and Fish Police, the latter 2 only lasted THREE EPISODES!!! Also promos for Top Cops and Street Stories. I remember Rescue 911 being a ratings winner for CBS back then too. I think ABC also aired True Stories of the FBI in the 1992 period. I wonder if these were an attempt to copy the success of America's Most Wanted? Its funny how hokey these shows seem now, all of which were replaced with reality TV. What genre would you call this? Pseudo scripted reality TV? Dramatization?

Same thing with me as far as my lack of success in finding tapes at yard sales within the last few weeks. I initially wanted to go to the Seville, Ohio community yard sales last weekend as I posted earlier, but both days the sales were going on, the weather was WAY too hot for me to want to go out there (90+ degrees). I did find some ads for sales going on within the next couple of days in the nearby communities of Medina and Brunswick. One listing I read in particular mentioned that VHS tapes would be among the items sold at one sale, so whether they're prerecorded or home-recorded is anyone's guess.

3/6/1992? Opening game of MLB Spring Training Atlanta Braves vs New York Yankees (MSG) ran over 3 hours to end of tape

Tape 2:
3/12/1988 ACC Semifinal Duke vs NC State (WRAL 5)
3/13/1988 ACC Championship Duke vs North Carolina (WRAL 5)
Oddly enough this was a tape done in LP, aka Long Play, a recording option that was only around on Panasonic VCRs after the 1980s, all later VCRs were the standard 2 hour at SP or 6 hours at EP, with more time for bigger tapes.

As a suggestion to those that are having trouble finding these home recorded tapes, I suggest putting out ads on local Nextdoor Community Pages, Craigslist, or Freecycle. I've had some luck with those in the past.

Also, if you have a relationship with a local thrift store manager (aka non corporate thrift like Goodwill or Salvation Army) ask them for their home recorded VHS tapes. Many have admitted that they automatically toss them in the trash, but after some coaxing a few true recycle minded folks have saved me boxes of these in the past.
 
How much did video cassettes cost in the mid 80's ?? Today at the Goodwill across the street from me they had 3 video cassettes of I Love Lucy. Even though they were opened they were in the original CBS box. Even though I was there to buy a rat cage I ended up buying the tapes instead. When I got home the first episode was there but the rest was "Taboo American Style"....yes a porno !! The other two again the first Lucy episode was there but again so was Taboo. Apparently Taboo American Style was a porno "mini-series since the beginning was "..here are some scenes from part two..". Makes me wonder if whoever had those tapes just didn't have the cash to buy blank cassettes but erase two episodes per box to record Taboo. Whatever the reason I learned my lesson...don't trust those stores when it comes to videotapes.

Blanks in the mid-'80s, IIRC, were in the $7-$12 range, generally, getting lower all the time. The prices came down sharply as the decade went on. I got my first VCR in 1983 and Radio Shack's basic cassette was $14.95.
 
Yes - I opened a video rental store in 1983 - got out of the business years before Netflix, thank God. For our opening weekend, we had a huge blank tape sale (both VHS & Beta) - price $14.95 each. We sold more than a hundred that first weekend.

But if you recall, VCRs were about $800 when they first became popular...about '81 IIRC. They were huge top-loading heavy things, and had a wired remote control that did nothing but "Pause." By the mid 90s, VCRs could be found for around $50, and had many more features than the original VCRs.
 
About a week ago I bought a large lot of Betamax tapes from Bozeman, MT. I ended up finding content from Butte/Bozeman and Denver on these tapes - some really cool stuff as well. Butte is the smallest market (Nielsen size) I've found on any VHS/Beta recorded tape! Here's the results:

Tape 10 - Starts with home video footage of a church musical at the Arvada Center for Arts and Humanities in Arvada, CO (circa 1986); two episodes of It Figures (exercise program) follows, taped off Lifetime in May 1986 with commercials; 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics Closing Ceremony taped off KCTZ/7 Bozeman (ABC) 2/28/1988 with commercials. I have the full broadcast already from KSTP, but this is even better! Ends with part of the 1986 NCAA Men's Hockey Final (Michigan State vs. Harvard) and part of SportsCenter, taped off ESPN 3/29/1986 with commercials. My oldest ESPN content ever!
Tape 11 - 'National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation' (1985), two Married with Children episodes, an episode of Sweating Bullets, Inside Edition Weekend and part of A Current Affair Extra taped off KCTZ (ABC/FOX) 12/6-7/1992 with commercials. KCTZ was ABC, airing Fox in off-hours. I believe either FoxNet or KDVR Denver was provided on Bozeman cable for full Fox access.
Tape 12 - Two episodes of Star Trek taped off KWGN in the mid 1980s minus commercials; NFL Football (Green Bay vs. Detroit) taped off KXLF/CBS 12/22/1990 with commercials, ends with a clip from Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, but the audio is total static! KXLF aired this show, so likely from them, and with technical issues when they got the feed from satellite.
Tape 13 (Tape snapped off, so unable to check first hour) - Starts with a clip of Western Montana News circa 1989 off KTVM Butte, then leads into a partial broadcast of 'Timestalkers' (1987) taped off KXLF/CBS Late Night 8/31-9/1/1988 with commercials; 'Innerspace' (1987) taped off unknown ABC station (suspect KCTZ) in late 1990 minus commercials; last part of Game 6 of the 1989 NBA Western Conference Finals and a nearly-complete 48 Hours taped off KXLF/CBS 5/31/1990 with commercials
Tape 14 - 'One Million B.C.' taped off KBDI/12 Denver circa 1985; 'The Time Machione' (1960) taped off KWGN circa 1986 minus commercials; Circus of the Stars taped off KXLF/CBS 12/15/1987 with some commercials; ends with about 5 minutes of CBS Evening News taped off KMGH Denver on Labor Day 1984 with commercials (Bill Kurtis filling in for Dan Rather)

You don't really expect thrift stores to check those used cassettes before putting them out on sale, do you? I'm sure those tapes have all sorts of scurrilous crap on them.

They don't even check CDs. I've been disappointed many times at the local Goodwill store when I've come across what I've thought was a CD I'd always wanted only to open the box and find another disc inside. Once there was a blank inside with the artist (misspelled!) and title written on it with a marker! To their credit, the cashiers always ask anyone checking out with CDs whether they've opened the box first.
 
The same can happen at any type of sale - yard sale, estate sale, anywhere where a blank tape is found, you don't know what's on the tape most of the time. This is what makes it fun! A large majority of the soap operas I've found were on tapes without labels or with movies on the handmade label...
I did find a mistake on one of my tapes. The partial 'This Week in Baseball' from KTVM was actually taped 9/5/1987, not 9/12.

For the most part I agree with you but in this case the cassettes were in the original CBS box. With blanks one takes a risk but in this case it would had been nice if they saw what was on those Lucy tapes in advance,

Did the tapes have a piece of clear tape over the do not record tab? When I see that odds are the tape was recorded over, and its a big red flag, but I will still take a chance if it is a rare or valuable pre-recorded movie.

Crainbebo, I'd be interested in the sports content on those tapes if you would like to convert them to DVD or MP4 files or something. I'll gladly trade you any of the stuff I posted on this board recently.

TAPE 9: Forrest Gump (1994) taped from HBO in November 1995 with promos after the movie; Billy Packer's College Tip-Off (NCAA basketball season inaugural special) and Prime Sports coverage of the 1995 WERA Challenge Series taped from SportsChannel Ohio in November 1995 with commercials; Richie Rich (1994) taped from HBO in December 1994 with promos after the movie. TAPE 10: The Wonderful World of Disney: 40 Years of Television Magic (ABC special) taped from WEWS on 12/10/1994 with commercials; Hook (1991) taped from WEWS (ABC Sunday Night Movie) on 12/11/1994 with commercials (many Sears commercials, as they were the primary sponsor of this movie broadcast); Garth Brooks: The Hits: Live from Texas Stadium (NBC special) taped from WKYC in January 1995 with two commercial breaks included. BASF T-130.

TAPE 11: 30 Years of National Geographic Specials (NBC special) taped from WKYC on 1/25/1995 with commercials; The O.J. Simpson Story (Fox made-for-TV movie) taped from WJW on 1/31/1995 with commercials; Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994) taped from HBO in February 1995 with promos after the movie. The ads and promos on this tape may or may not make it to YouTube. Why? Because my VCR would make awful clunking sounds whenever I would fast-forward or rewind the tape, kind of worried about that causing my heads to get dirty. Gemini T-120.

TAPE 12: Grumpy Old Men (1993) taped from unknown pay TV channel circa 1995; Addams Family Values (1993) taped from HBO in January 1995 with promos before the movie, including a Free Preview Weekend segment with Penn and Teller; Every Which Way But Loose (1978) taped from WEWS (ABC Family Movie) on 1/21/1995 with commercials (I believe crainbebo has a tape of the West Coast feed of this broadcast). Like the last tape, however, I may or may not try digitizing the ads and promos depending on whether I want to play back this tape again and take a chance with the clunking sounds my VCR made the first time. Tozai T-120.

Honorable mention (prerecorded tape pieced together by a professional video editor): Segment of Good Day Tampa Bay (WTVT Fox 13) on sleep disorders with specialist Dr. Neil Feldman taped on 8/27/1996; episode of The Maury Povich Show on sleep disorders with Dr. Feldman as one of the guests, taped from WTVT (screen bug is shown throughout the episode) sometime in 1996 minus commercials

Yes, I have that broadcast of Every Which Way But Loose on VHS, taped off KAPP. No tapes found yesterday at six different sales, one was full of retail movies however.
 
One error I made while typing my last entry--Richie Rich on HBO was taped in December 1995, not 1994 (that was when the movie was released theatrically).

Tape 4:
This one was a total disappointment. It was a vintage late 80s/early 90s Scotch blank from the tape stock and box, yet was recorded over with late 2000s TV, essentially a few hours of the Sunday night block on FOX (WRAZ I think), starting with the NFL overrun with the last 2 minutes of a Bears at Vikings game, then Family Guy and the other shows on the block (didnt watch closely but Cleveland Show and others).

I have a few dozen more to go through in a box I got free from Next Door, will update in the coming weeks.

TAPE 2: Frank, Dean & Sammy: An Evening at the Rat Pack (1965 closed-circuit TV special previously unaired to the public) taped from TV Land on 4/20/1998 with commercials, ending with a sketch from an episode of The Soupy Sales Show featuring the Rat Pack; two-part Biography episode on the Rat Pack taped from A&E in January 1999 with one commercial break intact

One other tape spotted at that yard sale supposedly contained news footage from September 11, 2001, but I left it behind. I already have three tapes of 9/11 news footage and could have possibly gotten some footage I already have.
