Can Megyn Kelly compete with 60 minutes?

http://www.adweek.com/tvnewser/conn...-megyn-kelly-interview-with-alex-jones/332564

According to WVIT the station will replace the Megyn Kelly Sunday Night Show with Local News.

WVIT, the NBC station that serves the Newtown, CT area won’t be airing Megyn Kelly‘s controversial interview with talk show host Alex Jones.

TVNewser reports the NBC-owned station sent a memo to staffers this afternoon explaining: “Whenever there is news regarding the Sandy Hook tragedy, we know that the pain resurfaces for our community, our viewers and for you, our colleagues at WVIT. Over the last few days, we have listened intently to Sandy Hook parents, our viewers and importantly, to you. We have considered the deep emotions from the wounds of that day that have yet to heal. Because those wounds are understandably still so raw, we have decided not to air this week’s episode of Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly.”

Kelly’s interview with Jones had come under intense scrutiny in addition to advertiser losses. Jones, a firebrand radio talk show host, has supported the theory that the Sandy Hook school shooting was a hoax.

Fairfield County can watch it on WNBC New York. Much of northern Connecticut can watch it on WWLP Springfield. Eastern Connecticut can watch it on WJAR Providence.

I wonder if WVIT was feeling the heat from advertisers even more than it was from viewers.

Well here is another one

In the memo to WVIT staff, Susan Tully, the station's general manager and president, said that because the wounds caused by the Sandy Hook tragedy are "understandably still so raw, we have decided not to air this week's episode of Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly."

Whenever there is news about Sandy Hook, "we know that the pain resurfaces for our community," Tully wrote. "Over the last few days, we have listened intently to Sandy Hook parents [and] considered the deep emotions from the wounds of that day that have yet to heal."

The memo said the station would include a report on its 11 p.m. broadcast Sunday. The interview will be available to those who want to see it on Monday on NBCNews.com.

Update

Megyn Kelly’s controversial interview with Alex Jones failed to rise above previous installments of Kelly’s new NBC News show in the Sunday overnight ratings.

According to Nielsen data, the new installment of “Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly” averaged a 0.5 rating in adults 18-49 and 3.5 million viewers, airing at 7 p.m. The previous two episodes of the freshman news show have averaged a 0.7 and 4.9 million viewers.

Kelly lost in the timeslot in both measures against both the U.S Golf Open Championship (1.4, 6.1 million) on Fox and a rerun of “America’s Funniest Home Videos” (0.7, 3.7 million) on ABC. She tied with a rerun of “60 Minutes” in the demo, but the CBS news magazine topped her in total viewers with 5.3 million.

Many were critical of Kelly’s decision to interview Jones, who has stated he believes the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre was a hoax, among many other conspiracy theories. Jones himself even complained publicly about the interview, claiming that Kelly misrepresented his take on Sandy Hook. He leaked the full audio of the interview on last Thursday.

NBC aired only repeats during the rest of Sunday primetime.

ABC aired a new episode of “Celebrity Family Feud” (1.4, 6.1 million) at 8 p.m., followed by “Steve Harvey’s Funderdome” (1.0, 5.1 million) and “The $100,000 Pyramid” (0.9, 4.9 million).

CBS aired repeats, while Fox aired the U.S Golf Open Championship and a new episode of “American Grit” (0.6, 1.8 million).

ABC and Fox tied for first place in the demo with a 1.0, but ABC was first in total viewers with 4.9 million. Fox was third in total viewers with 3.9 million. NBC was third in the demo with a 0.6 but fourth in viewers with 2.6 million. CBS was fourth in the demo with a 0.4 but second in total viewers with 4.3 million.

I'm amazed that golf did so well, considering no real name players were in the hunt. I will admit, I was one of the golf watchers.

Me, too. IMHO, golf is a nice change of pace from all the political bickering. Alex Jones vs. The US Open? I choose the Open, despite the no-names.

She's even behind Funny Home Videos, huh?!?

This, despite a LOT of publicity regarding the interview. Things just aren't going well for her on NBC.

I don't think her talk show will do good come the fall just my opinion Jane & Katie have failed with the type of talk show that Kelly is trying to do.

It would help if people knew who the guest was. This guy is not someone the general public cares about. It's all inside baseball stuff.

If they want her to get big ratings on Sunday night, they need to spend an hour with Jay Z, Beyoncé, and the twins. That's what people want to see.

Whats hurting Kelly is she's unknown to NBC's audience, this was only her third show on NBC and viewers have no idea what kind of interviewer she is. It doesn't really matter she came from FNC, It would be the same if she came from CNN, MSNBC or anyplace else. If Jones was interviewed by say CBS's Lesley Stahl on 60 Minutes there wouldn't of been a backlash because the audience knows Stahl would be very tough on him.

It does seem like a mistake trying for these controversial hard hitting interviews especially since her Sunday show is only running this summer then returning after the Olympics in 2018. They could air a celebrity interview a episode to bring in the ratings while still airing hard news pieces. It would gear her up for her morning show and viewers could she a lighter side of her before she officially starts her 9 am show.

She does have some seemingly good interviews lined up for the rest of the summer, including JD Vance, author of Hillbilly Elegy. It might catch on, but I think the mistake was trying to beat 60 Minutes at its game in the same time slot.

Here is the video from the Alex Jones interview. I saw that segment and Kelly did a great job at exposing Jones for his antics.

The problem here with her ratings is that we are still judging Kelly for her political issues at Fox News. But this interview with Jones showed the insanity of Alex Jones and his staff to a wider audience.
I go to church with Alex Jones' mother and I have to wonder how she feels about all this.

Yes, probably a different guy.

Update for Megyn Kelly's ratings for Sunday Night.

“Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly” continued its downward trajectory in the Sunday overnight ratings, with the new NBC newsmagazine slipping to a new low in both the key demo and total viewers. Meanwhile, Fox fell to an average of less than 1 million viewers on a rerun-dominated night.

Airing at 7 p.m., “Sunday Night” averaged a 0.4 rating in adults 18-49 and 3.4 million viewers, according to Nielsen data. That is down from a 0.5 and 3.6 million viewers last week’s episode, which featured Kelly’s controversial interview with InfoWars founder Alex Jones.

In the timeslot, “Sunday Night” lost out to CBS’ “60 Minutes,” which was down from its last new episode on June 11 with a 0.7 and 7.2 million viewers. ABC led the night with a rerun of “America’s Funniest Home Videos” (0.7, 3.9 million).

NBC aired “Despicable Me” and a rerun of “Little Big Shots: Forever Young” for the rest of primetime.

ABC’s fortunes improved with its 8-11 p.m. gameshow stack. “Celebrity Family Feud” (1.4, 7.1 million) rose in total viewers. “Steve Harvey’s Funderdome” (1.1, 5.5 million) ticked up in both measures, as did “The $100,000 Pyramid” (1.1, 5.2 million).

Aside from “60 Minutes,” CBS aired only repeats.

Fox aired mostly repeats except at 9 p.m. with a new episode of “American Grit” (0.4, 1 million), which was down in both measures.

Update for Megyn Kelly's ratings for Sunday Night.

Having learned their lesson the previous week, they did no advance promotion at all for this show, and consequently fewer people watched.

TV networks run repeats in the summer for a reason: Fewer people watching. Thanks to daylight savings time, people are outside at 7PM, not watching TV.

It's even worse in the central and mountain, as primetime Sunday begins at 6pm! Summer is NOT the season to debut a new series against 60 minutes.
