The network that hasn't died yet: The CW

With all the chatter over the years back and forth here about the CW and MyNetworkTV that came from it, it's finally occurred that the CW has managed to last longer than its predecessors UPN and WB did in 11 years (1995-2006), in the last 11 years. I've heard it somewhere before that the CW has managed to last but wasn't as culturally significant as the ones before it as they are more fondly remembered.

I watch exactly one program on CW - reruns of "Two and a Half Men". Otherwise their lineup stinks (almost as bad as Fox).

"Two and a Half Men" is not a CW program. It is carried in Phoenix by the CW affiliate, KASW, via syndication.

"Outside of the CW network schedule, Syndicated programming featured on KASW includes Two and a Half Men, Judge Mathis, Lauren Lake's Paternity Court, The Simpsons, and Friends among others. "

And...

"Two and a Half Men entered local United States broadcast syndication in 2007, with the first four seasons available to local stations (largely CW affiliates in the major U.S. television markets through major deals with Tribune Broadcasting and the Sinclair Broadcast Group).[70] On September 6, 2010, FX began airing the series daily nationwide. Syndicated shows are sold in multiyear cycles, with the first cycle the most expensive."

Most of the programming of CW affiliates is local or syndicated, and does not come from the network:

"The network currently runs programming six days a week: airing Monday through Fridays in the afternoon and in prime time, along with a Saturday morning live-action educational programming block"

CW provides 2 hours of prime, as opposed to the three on the other significant OTA networks. The primary target of CW is women 18-34; you are not in their target.

Also in Some cities specifically in DMA where CBS owns both the CW affiliate and a CBS Affiliate in the same market in some cases like in the case of KBCW San Francisco and KMAX Sacramento the CW affiliate may air CBS Programming just in case the main CBS O&O like KPIX San Francisco or KOVR Sacramento has to pre-empt CBS Programming because of yes news related reasons. I know that KBCW on Occassions air Face the Nation from CBS in case CBS has to go to NFL Games on some weeks though. But then again CW may air shows on Primetime like Supergirl. SUpergirl was originally a show that CBS Distributed but then again CBS thought the venue was better for CW when that show moved in 2016 though.

I agree what David means that CW is mostly syndicated or local though due to the owners of the CW affiliate though except for primetime hours. Also the OP forgets to mention that the CW has to compete against other groups for content like yes Hulu, Netflix, YouTube and others most notably for their content to stand out. Maybe that's why the OP says CW isn't as culturally significant than the WB and UPN?

The only time I cared about CW was when they carried WWE Smackdown!. That show had transferred from UPN. It would later go to MY, then SyFy and now USA Network.

I'd wager, were I prone to betting, that the CW isn't programmed to an audience that resembles the general constituency of this forum. That doesn't mean they "stink," just that they have a different mission.

Yes, I know. I was commenting on the shows they air and not what they create. My point being that the one syndicated show is far better than anything they have created. And since KASW is programmed by KTVK I have always been surprised that "Two and a Half Men" didn't show on the parent channel. It doesn't fit with the foolishness that the rest of KASW airs.

I don't think that's true any more. Except for "Supergirl", I have a hard time picturing the superhero shows appealing to that audience.

"Whose Line Is It Anyway" seems like it would appeal more to men.

And who would watch the two magic shows?

I am male and way older than this target audience and I've been watching a lot of their shows.

So do Fox and My. I think Fox now qualifies as "significant".

Fox has, in the past, beaten NBC and has occasionally won entire nights and weeks. It has long been considered one of the majors.

The ranking of the broadcast webs , after CBS, ABC, NBC and Fox is usually Univision, Telemundo, UniMas and then CW.

I'm thinking that Fox came in second several years ago and if you consider 18-49 they look much better.

And Fox has had NFL since 1994. Some years they are as high as #2 in the ratings. This was the amount of households and people for a week in mid March this year.

"The Flash" is actually their highest rated show in this demo.

"Legends of Tomorrow", "Arrow" and "Supernatural" are also all winners for The CW. Some of them lean a little more male than others, but they have a formula that's getting their desired viewers (for now at least)

KTVK hasn't programmed KASW for more than two years.

I probably watch more CW shows than most of the people who watch any shows on The CW.

Just this season, I have watched "Supergirl", "No Tomorrow" (not as good as I had hoped), "Jane the Virgin", "The Flash", "iZombie", "Whose Line", "Hooten & the Lady" (not really enjoying it but I have more time in the summer), "Penn & Teller: Fool Us", "Riverdale", "Reign" and "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend".
