The Munsters to return on NBC

These reboots are only as good as the scripts. Same with the Miami Vice reboot, and all the others.

The original concept is fine, and one can redo that concept as often as you want. But what will make it a success is if the new show is good.

The original of this series only lasted 2 years and they ran out of ideas. Star Trek only lasted 3. But with Star Trek, they were able to revive the concept multiple times and take it into new areas. That's creativity. Same with Batman. That show only lasted a few years on TV, but has made billions in reboots.

The original was a dumbed-down attempt to ride the coattails of "The Addams Family." And who is a reboot of a 50-year-old series going to attract but a bunch of nostalgic 60-plus viewers? Why does Hollyweird (and its television accomplices) continue to produce remakes of ancient series? They made movies out of "Car 54, Where Are You?" and "Peabody and Sherman." Both tanked. I expect the same fate for "The Munsters" on NBC.

Oh come on now. None of them will watch because they only want to watch the originals. You know that's true.

That's why I say it's important that this show be written well, and have stars people care about. Because the people who may watch will be those who not only never watched the original, but likely never even knew it existed. This is a completely new concept to today's viewers, based on a 50 year old concept. Not the first time something like this has been done. People have been remaking the classics for years. Shakespearian plays have been remade with new titles and new more modern circumstances, and have become hits. So it can happen. It all depends on the execution. Why do they keep doing it? Because it's an idea they can sell.

I think it was a given the movie Car 54 would tank, Even though the show was a hit on Nick@Nite and later Comedy Central it was full of Jewish humor. Funny say in New York maybe Boston but a lot of the humor didn't fly very well say in Charlotte or Memphis.

As far as the new Munsters is concerned considering that zombies and monsters in IN today and the theme song was featured in a popular song a little while ago it may be a hit.

They get some teen heartthrob to play Eddie, and it will be a hit. Especially if he takes his shirt off every now and then.

These reboots are getting out of control. That being said, one or two could break through, and that is what the networks are hoping for. But it seems to me this an easy way out as repeating success as opposed with coming up with original ideas. Kind of sad at the end of the day.

Have you ever sat in a pitch meeting? Trying to explain an original concept to a room full of people with short attention spans can be tough. Truthfully, there are very few "original ideas." Or at least ideas that can sell. That's what this is about. BTW Godfather 2 won more awards than the original, and was the first sequel to win for Best Picture. So it's possible to outdo an original.

Riding those coattails must've been quite a feat since "The Munsters" premiered six days after the debut of the "The Addams Family" in Sept. 1964 per Brooks and Marsh.

And both were canceled after the second season. Interesting IMO that TV's most remembered ghoul sitcoms overlapped basically exactly.

Part of the reason that The Munsters died during the second season was that it was up against the second part of the weekly Batman two-parter when it was white-hot in early 1966. Speaking of The Addams Family, John Astin and Carolyn Jones both appeared as Batman villains during the second season, with Ted Cassidy making a window cameo.

I was going to suggest a remake of My Favorite Martian but I realized that Mork and Mindy could be considered that remake. Hmm, has it been long enough?? With all the zombie stuff on TV today, could a new Munsters be considered too similar or not similar enough?

My Favorite Martian was redone some years back, now Mork and Mindy good question !! Today myself I don't think it would work because of the suicide of Robin Williams even though Robin doesn't own the show but many people feel that out of respect for Robin Williams the show shouldn't be redone today and the original be shown. I don't go along with that but whatever !!! When he died so many people ( especially the young ) wrote online "Mork is dead", "Long live Mork" while they didm't mention any of his movies and paid their respects at the Mork & Mindy house on Pine Street in Boulder, Colorado.

Right now...NO but say in 10 years...maybe.

I don't think "out of respect" for Williams should be the reason. The simple fact is that anyone who tries to follow in his footsteps (I'm not sure what contemporary comedian is in the same mold) is going to get trashed in every medium or simply won't have the chops to measure up.

Have you, TheBigA, or do you know someone who has?

The original "Munsters" was one of those shows that would just not have been as good in color, along with "The Addams Family" and any of the creepy-scary anthology shows like Hitchcock, "Thriller", The Twilight Zone" or "The Outer Limits".

There were a few made for TV Munster movies with the original cast in color. For those who grew up with, and appreciate, the art form, black and white can not be replaced. But, unfortunately there are now several generations of viewers who can't stand the colorless black and white TV and movies.
