Newsy/ EW Scripps to spend $23 Million to get into cable

Newsy, the national OTT news network focused on millennial audiences, has launched a major expansion into the cable and satellite marketplace, kicked off by the E.W. Scripps Co.’s purchase of carriage contracts from the Retirement Living Television (RLTV) cable network.

Scripps will take over RLTV’s carriage agreements for about 26 million subscribers and reprogram the network with Newsy’s lineup of shows already available on major OTT services including YouTubeTV and SlingTV. The transition from RLTV to Newsy will begin over the next few months, and Newsy expects to expand its reach to about 40 million cable and satellite subscribers by the end of 2018.

Scripps said the acquisition’s purchase price is based on the number of subscribers that come under contract with the cable companies and convert to Newsy. The final purchase price could be up to $23 million, no more than 93 cents per subscriber.

“Newsy has already made a name for itself among millennial news consumers who rely on over-the- top television. Now we’ll be reaching Americans with cable and satellite service who are looking for a fresh approach to news coverage,” said Adam Symson, president-CEO of Scripps. “This expanded reach for our advertising business alongside carriage fees furthers our strategy to develop Newsy as a prominent multi-platform news network with dual revenue streams.”

Newsy features in-depth coverage of the day’s top world and U.S. news stories, crafted by and for millennials. Newsy’s storytelling is wrapped into a new original programming lineup that includes the evening newsmagazine The Why, and soon will include the morning show The Day Ahead and the newsmaker spotlight program 30 Minutes With. Newsy’s programming strategy reflects its signature approach — insight, context and sources focused on solutions, particularly for 18-34-year-olds.

Yes E.W.Scripps (Owners of WXYZ7 Detroit) is going to make Newsy a cable network and its going after the 18-34 crowd. Its Scripps answer to CBSN.

I say the Newsy Network will do well in cities where E.W.Scripps own local TV stations like Detroit, San Diego, Las Vegas and Denver

Assuming it's on cable systems there. This was not a priority network for cable systems. Most majors don't carry it.

Well Pluto TV, Film on app, YouTube TV, Tunein Radio does carry Newsy but I'm not sure exactly how much of an audience increase will take place when E.W. Scripps finalize the deal with cable providers though. But I do expect E.W. Scripps owned stations to make lots of promos for Newsy in the near future in markets where they own TV stations.
 
Why dont CBS bring CBSN to cable as well as internet I read an article about Newsy going on cable and one of the owners of Newsy said cable was still where the money is. CBS like Newsy already have the linear channel online anyway so CBSN could be the exact same channel on cable (its not like they would have to make a new channel they already have it) Could CBS be tempted more now after Newsy? Why wouldnt they have cable as well as online?

But your subject line says they're bringing it to cable. Name a cable company that carries them, either from RLTV or as Newsy. I didn't see any mentioned in your linked articles.

Well theres another factor here CBSN segments are also used on CBS O&O's stations for national news segments and they air on KPIX and KOVR. Also CBSN promos air between news segments on CBS Owned local news and the CBS Evening News. As always it has something to do with demos of their respective audiences.

None for now but Comcast was named in one of the articles to get Newsy in the deal.
 
Retirement Living is not a Diginet in Detroit. WXYZ has Bounce and Laff. I suppose they'll add a 7.4 or drop one of the other Diginets to carry this when it launches.

I doubt it gets much traction. Scripps simply doesn't have enough distribution to give it the necessary critical mass.
 
I didn't even know their was a RLTV I don't see it on Charter Spectrum in Kazoo doesn't even say who carries it when I looked up RLTV on wiki yesterday. I thought that Scripps was getting out of the cable network business with the merger with Discovery?
 
Well EW Scripps also manage Scripps National News Youtube Feeds I'm not sure how much the Scripps owned stations use Newsy, or Scripps National News brands in their Newscasts though.

Still though the subject line is about them getting into cable, and YouTube isn't a cable channel.
