Dishonest advertising?

Get this: I heard Joe Piscopo reading a My Pillow commercial in which he repeatedly emphasized an "exclusive" 50% discount "This offer is only for am970 listeners, you WILL NOT hear this offer anywhere else!" Why? Cuz the CEO of My Pillow "loves' am970 listeners! (Give me a break!) Only problem: WOR & WABC are currently running My Pillow commercials offering--you guessed it--a 50% discount.

Piscopo actually said the CEO of My Pillow loves am970 listeners because they love God like him.

He loves people buying his pillows, and probably doesn't care about their theology, so long as the check is good or the credit card goes through.

But, really.....isn't all advertising dishonest (or, more likely....incomplete)?

Who the hell can read that fine print on TV screens in the less-than-one-second they give you?

I think am970's audience is so small, they feel they can do and say anything in commercials and nobody will notice

If memory serves this is the second thread you've done on this subject. If it bothers you, contact the FCC or the FTC.

Neither agency trolls message boards.

BTW all of these 1-800 deals are considered "exclusive," because each station has it's own unique phone number. If you call the number on 970, that station gets credit for the sale. If you call WOR, it's a different number, and THEY get credit. Most likely the station makes no money at all unless someone buys. Thus the desperation of their plea.

The 50% discount on the My Pillows is promoted as exclusive to am970: "You will not see or hear this offer anywhere else!"

Key words: "This offer," which can be interpreted as being made by this particular host. Let me know if you hear Piscopo making the same offer anywhere else. That's the advantage of having a host read spot.

Piscopo is not part of the offer, he is not personally making the offer, nor is he directly involved in the company that manufactures and sells the pillows. He is the endorser of the product, and My Pillow is paying him to read copy (or is this just part of his salaried job at the station, and he's not paid extra?). This offer is being made by My Pillow, they pay the station, and this offer is being advertised on several stations in NYC, if not many others nationwide.

If he's adlibbing on talking points, he's part of the offer, and is personally making the offer. But you're right that he's not involved with the company.

If it's a generic voice, it's a different story.
