ESPN Pundit Jemele Hill Reprimanded for Calling Trump White Supremacist

The thing I want to know is if it will affect ESPN's ratings.

Politics aside -- who wants to watch a sports network and get bombarded by yet more politics, as if the internet, NPR, talk radio, newspapers, and all-pervasive social media isn't already loaded with it? Is this affecting ESPN's ratings any?

Well too late the Golden State Warriors of the NBA and the NFL is forced into a political fiasco because of Trump and Fox sports, ESPN, NBC Sports are forced to respond via their pundits

They may have to cover it, but as for them being 'forced to respond via their pundits', that simply isn't true. They have a choice as to what to allow their pundits to address, or not address.

Either way, the situation isn't likely to help ESPNs flagging fortunes.

It depends on who you consider their "pundits." Because I haven't seen them do anything during games other than report the news. No commentary during the games. I don't watch their daytime shows, so that may be where it's being discussed. But you have to separate what ESPN people are saying from outside commentators or interview subjects. Management was very clear about not having staffers get involved.

Yes. These subjects are the bread and butter of SportsCenter both during the day, and presumably the night-side versions too. And on ESPN Radio. And probably on First Take and their other shows that are purely-opinion based.

It's one thing to separate out what Lebron James says from what ESPN staff say. It's another when they invite a political pundit (I see Michael Eric Dyson pretty regularly) to talk about political subjects.

I'm just saying the ESPN memo on the subject seemed pretty clear about what is and is not appropriate for employees.

Well ESPN and other sports/talk shows are going to once and again have to explain politics and its conections to sports once again now that the NHL has responded and has been named in response to the president and the NFL.

Actually they don't "have to explain" anything.

Say goodbye!

It's a very bad situation when you have an employee of a company that has a contract with the NFL calling for an advertiser boycott.

at this point, they should just go ahead and cut their losses and can her and retool SC6 back to just another normal hour of SportsCenter.

also, she'll be a better fit at CNN on MSNBC if she goes full "Keith Olbermann"

Well I also thought about this and I knew that if Hill was removed from ESPN that Competing Sports/Talk networks would not want to deal with her. But I was also taking into account how would Political News/talk channels, Political Youtube shows, and Podcasts deal with her though.

Thinking about it, I'm not sure she'd fit in at either place.

Are you thinking about the fallout from Megyn Kelly moving from Fox News to NBC and see how this move will affect Jemele Hill specifically? I thought about this argument but was left with more questions though.

This scandal between Jemele Hill, Trump and the NFL gets crazier and crazier and everybody else is just a pawn in this feud.

President Donald Trump is suggesting the U.S. change its tax laws to punish organizations like the NFL if members are "disrespecting" the national anthem or flag.

The NFL gave up its federal tax-exempt status a few years ago and now files tax returns as a taxable entity. So it's unlikely that Trump's proposal, tweeted in the early hours Tuesday, would change anything.

Trump tweeted : "Why is the NFL getting massive tax breaks while at the same time disrespecting our Anthem, Flag and Country? Change tax law!"

Trump also tweeted Tuesday that ESPN ratings have "tanked" because of Jemele Hill, the anchor suspended for making political statements on social media.

While NFL viewership is down slightly, ESPN remains among the most popular cable networks, averaging 3 million viewers in prime time. The network has suffered subscriber losses over the last few years as some viewers have moved to streaming services from cable television.

Hill, an African-American co-host of the 6 p.m. broadcast of "SportsCenter," received backlash last month after calling Trump a "white supremacist" in a series of tweets that referenced the president's comments about a deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

That comment prompted Trump to demand an apology from ESPN and White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders to call for Hill's firing.

While ESPN took no formal action against Hill over the Trump comment, she did apologize to the network for the trouble her remarks had caused while standing by the tweets. ESPN cited that apology in announcing Hill's suspension Monday , saying in a statement that ESPN employees had been "reminded of how individual tweets may reflect negatively on ESPN and that such actions would have consequences."

Hill targeted Jerry Jones on Twitter on Sunday after the Dallas Cowboys owner stated that players who disrespect the flag would not play for his team. She suggested fans who disagree with Jones should boycott the team's advertisers and not buy the team's merchandise.

A couple points: The NFL gave up their tax breaks several years ago. So he's wrong about that. The president doesn't have the power to change tax laws by himself. The NFL isn't actually involved in the protest, so he's blaming the wrong group. And a few years ago, the Democrats got in trouble using the IRS to check into conservative groups. He's treading close to getting into big trouble. When the government threatens citizens over their free speech, it can become a big problem. Other than that, I hope he's having fun, and the base is enjoying it. I wonder what they'll do instead of watching football on Sundays.

And all the taxpayer-subsidized billion dollar stadium projects?
