Directv offers refunds over NFL Games plus people offended over protests

I have no opinion on that. But what I do have an opinion on a related story that a Facebook friend had posted on her wall. It was a story about people burning their NFL season tickets, jerseys, hats, etc. I'm offended by that. People wasting money like that. I mean I paid for $150 last year for a customized NFL Jersey for a friend's birthday gift. If I found out he burned it, there would be no friendship any more. (That was hard earned money. I have a problem saving money. It should've been $10 put away each week for 15 weeks, but instead I had to take it out of one paycheck).

I'm so over it I'm use to some players kneeling or sitting don't really like the siting thou stay in the locker room if your going to sit don't mind locking arms that is cool. I don't like fans burning there jerseys & clothes donate them to Good Will or Sal-Army for those that can't afford to buy clothes.

Just an FYI, ratings for baseball, which isn't taking part in the NFL protest, nor has been mentioned by the president, and also down this year.

ESPN's ratings are down quite a bit, which would reflect in both baseball and football.

Although Colin Kaepernick started his protest last year, the real controversy started last Friday
with a tweet from Trump, and the reaction on Sunday. I don't think you will see this reflected in
the ratings numbers for awhile yet.

If Trump hadn't stirred this up last week the protests over the weekend wouldn't have happened, and they're aimed more at him than anything else.

Cheeto has done a great job of distracting the American people from the really important things going on in Washington and in his administration.

Kaepernick's reason for protesting the anthem was originally about police brutality according to the 49ers at the time. But yes when other NFL teams did their protest its against President Trump and members going after them.

There was a time when TV and radio stations cut away from the anthem. Then the NFL made the anthem an event by booking celebrities to sing it. I seem to recall they stopped cutting away after 9-11. Perhaps it's time to review this policy and return to the days when the anthem was primarily something for the fans in the stadium, and not required viewing for TV audiences. It seems to turn this into a political thing or even a free speech thing which isn't keeping with the intentions of sporting events. And while we're at it, no politicians should be invited to any future NFL games.

Agree. I'd go a step further and just say to omit the anthem altogether. It is not appropriate for a sporting event unless during the awards ceremony at an international competition (and even then I think it is overkill). We do not need to promote nationalism.

That's a separate decision, to be made by the leagues. My comment is about broadcasting. I feel its an editorial decision to show the protest. When Colin Kaepernick originally did his thing, it wasn't always covered by the cameras. He just expressed his opinion, as is his right. Showing the protest is giving attention to it, similar to showing steakers or fans who storm the field during a game. A long time ago, TV companies decided against showing on-field distractions. It's fine for the first week, since it's news. But I'd suggest they shouldn't make this a regular aspect of the game. The first amendment allows people to speak their mind. It doesn't guarantee national TV exposure.

That's why I said "I'd go a step further".

I really doubt the broadcasters would unilaterally stop showing the anthem because of the negative response from those who think it is tradition or required. Or, it could be that the majority of viewers are just settling down in their rockers and opening up the first of many cans of beer.

I imagine the league will have something to say about this. It's not in the broadcasters best interest to get in the middle of some political issue. We'll see if it continues this wknd. But I don't see any upside to broadcasters or their advertisers. And at the end of the day, it will be the advertisers who will decide what happens. The minute it costs anyone money is when it'll be resolved.
