12 News -- Recorded Forecasts

KAET, KSAZ and KPNX, Rf 8, 10, and 12 can be received, without any amplification,
in parts of Prescott Valley, nearly 90 miles from South Mtn. The signals are consistant
and steady, day and night. Thunderstorms create some issues with pixelization.
The bottom line is those stations send out a great signal. Reception issues are the real
reason for any issues with Hi-VHF.......

How big are the antennas being used in Prescott Valley? I'm guessing that they are rather large and up on towers or at least good sized masts. In many parts of the Phoenix metro, outside antennas are not allowed, per HOA regs.

I disagree. I used to live in far, far NW metro area and had a standard VHF/UHF antenna in my attic (shielded to some extent by the foil insulation in the walls). I never had a reception problem until the stations went digital then nothing but trouble.

The antennas are not that large and are no more than 25 feet agl.

Finally, we installed several OUTDOOR antennas in your immediate
area, near Falcon Field in Mesa. That was 18 months ago. The
antennas are no higher than the roof in each case. We have not
heard from any HOA's nor the F.A.A.

Yes, digital signals do behave differently from analog signals. They are more prone to issues
from overload and/or multipath in many cases. The foil may well have been your issue.

Since then we moved to South Tempe in a straight line about 8 miles east of the South Mountain towers. I am using the same VHF/UHF/FM outdoor antenna that I used up north but reception on VHF is worse. It sits about 10 feet off the ground on the roof of my back porch with a direct line of sight to the towers. When the three VHF stations first went digital the reception was terrible. Since then they have apparently done something to improve their signal because most of the time now it comes in OK (except for 8 which is still a problem at times). It got so bad on 10 that I used to scrub the digital signal from my menu and go with their 10.2 (analog) signal. PQ was almost as good and no interference at all (and yes, I realize it is a UHF signal).

When the seasons change and the sun is to the west of the towers I usually lose the signal completely for 5-10 minutes. It happens regular as clockwork.

Generally, keeping an antenna at or below existing structures or trees won't get you in any trouble with the FAA. However, one must take into account the elevation of the property and how high it is above the Falcon Field runways (1365 ft. ASL, IIRC).

That's the problem I have: My yard, near 64th St. & Thomas, just south of Red Mountain Ranch, is at 1500 ft ASL. Elevation goes up rapidly as one goes further east, getting closer to Usery Mountain. The only reason I can put up any kind of antenna at all is that the FAA doesn't require registration for anything 20 feet or lower above ground level. The FCC's TOWAIR site says that I would have to register even a 21 foot mast or tower with the FAA. There are no towers or masts of any kind on any house in this area, HOA-controlled or not (mine isn't).

I also have a back yard full of Ficus trees that provide nice shade, but block TV signals. There's also a house behind me, directly between my back porch and South Mountain. Were it not for those, I'd have a nice, clear shot to the TV towers. Since the elevation goes down the further west I go, it also makes cell service next to impossible without a range extender or secondary connection via the Interwebs. The top of my local cell tower is actually about 10 feet below my yard, and 3 blocks west of me near the Fire Station.

To be absolutely fair, virtually all the mainstream TV stations in Phoenix have done this. Some ran loops on their sub-channels which were hours out of date. Some present a "live" weather report every 10-15 minutes but with the same stale data (really, what changes in 15 minutes?). How many people in Phoenix use TV for the weather anyway? One click on your smartphone gives you instant weather conditions and forecast.

The loops on the subchannel are not expected to be "live", nor are they advertised as such. When I tune into a live newscast at a specific time, I expect a "live" weather report or at least a recently recorded one (I understand occasionally there will be a coverage issue when someone is sick). 12 News isn't even trying to give the current conditions outside. In the past, when recorded forecasts have been used, I've seen the anchors read the current conditions and perhaps the high temp for the day before saying "here's so-and-so's forecast". Plus, at 10pm on 12, Caribe could just step over to the green screen and give the forecast...

A bit off topic of recorded forecasts. Last night after NBC Nightly News,
12 VERIFIED that we do indeed have nuclear weapons capable
of annihilating North Korea. 12 sets new low standards for insulting
peoples intelligence.........

Perhaps 12 VERIFIED that 12 hour old weather forecasts are acceptable to its viewers... ;)
