Jeff Glor to host the CBS Evening News

I agree. He's a seasoned pro, and has done a great job anchoring weekends. He was my first pick when the gig opened up.

"Host", sounds like a Talk Show.
I heard, Jeff Glor was named Anchor of CBS Evening News.

Sorry, the use of Host, bugged me.

I am somewhat underwhelmed by this choice. Yes, he is good. But more than anything else, it seems daily evening network news has never been closer to being extinct. (of course they have been saying this for the past 30 years, so...)

Compare the network news operation today with what it was 40 years ago. Back then, the evening news was basically all they had. That's not the case now. They all operate as 24/7 operations. The evening news is an important component, mostly for the affiliates, but you're right that it's far from being what it was many years ago. I also doubt that Glor has the power that someone like Cronkite or Rather had. He has some control over his show, but not over the department. That train left the station for all three networks, and the reason is because the canvas they paint on is so much bigger. I don't agree that the evening news is close to being extinct, because it's so critical to affiliate station deals. They need the national network news as core to their overall news presence. It helps define them in their communities. But beyond that, in the mind of viewers, it might as well be extinct. Because there's no need to wait for the evening news, just as there's no need to wait for the daily newspaper to arrive. But when the evening news is on, it's important that it be a well planned and well reported half hour, because it represents the company's news operation.

Jeff Glor is certainly as capable as his rivals at ABC and NBC.
Can CBS make their evening newscast stand out, being better
than rivals is the question they need to ask themselves.

At least in my market (Phoenix) this isn't as true as it might be in others. Our local Fox affiliate is an O&O but it does not depend upon a national news program as a lead-in and that doesn't appear to hurt its news operation.

Personally, I have found that the national news half-hours are too shallow to cover any unique story (except for the horrendous over-coverage of hurricane damage recently) and still subscribe to the ending fluff piece which is rarely news.

Of course Fox has never offered its affiliates a national news program, so there's no way to really know. I can tell you that the affiliates of the three other networks are very vocal about retaining the evening show.

Jeff Glor is 42. Anthony Mason is 61.

With this move, CBS was looking long-term...a younger anchor who could stick around for at least 10 years.

To show how out of touch I am with network news - I don't even know who Jeff Glor is, though I've heard the name before. Years ago, I was a CBS news junkie. Like many, or maybe most people now, I get my news primarily now from NPR, the internet, and occasionally CNN for big breaking stories. But any CBS correspondent that's not on 60 Minutes, I probably won't know.

You are not alone. I had not even heard his name. Both ABC and NBC evening news air at the same time here in Phoenix. CBS is one half-hour later so I never watch it.

Never heard of him. I watch Steve Hartman on Friday night and that's it. And I can fast-forward through everything up to the introduction. I might not even see that.

I agree with vchimp.....Hartman is the best part of the CBS Newscast. On the rare occasion when I'm home in time to watch the evening news, I do watch CBS, but only make a point to look in on Hartman's segments if I miss it, which is most of the time.

In the past, sometimes a new anchor will also bring changes to the theme, the set, or the graphics. I doubt this will be the case with Glor on Monday, as these production features are still relatively new, but anything is possible.

You will not see Charlie Rose any longer on CBS or even PBS

Last night I watched the 50th anniversary episode of "60 Minutes". Although I watch neither news magazines nor network newscasts, Scott Pelley's voice makes me feel comfortable.
