KHHT 98.9 Mettler (Kern County)

It seems that 98.9 KHHT is on full time now. They even play an occasional commercial.

Their signal into Bakersfield is still weak. I was driving around this morning and 98.9 KSOF was stepping all over it.
I haven't made it over to the south part of town yet (by Hosking Ave), around where KHHT's 60dbu contour ends -- perhaps it will be better down there. The east side of Bakersfield might get better reception as well, as that area is shadowed from Eshom Point stations by the Oildale hills.

KHHT-FM has filed an application to relocate to a new site west of I5. KKCA-FM, Arvin has also filed to move to the same site.

As of today, KHHT has started transmitting from their new site. Reception into Bakersfield is much improved compared to the previous low wattage transmitter (1,400 watts vs. 220w). Unlike before, it covers up KSOF pretty well, but I'm not sure how far north the cut-off point will be.

I'll check it out it soon, and let you know next time I'm down there.

Of course, just after I posted it, KHHT went off-air. I've only heard them on again once since.
Looking at fccdata.org, they filed for Remain Silent Authority back in March, asking for time off-air until the new transmitter site is complete. So while it is obvious the new location has equipment set up already, who knows when they will be back on full time.

Another thought: maybe KKCA 95.7 could move up to their old transmitter site on top of the Grapevine, instead of Wheeler Ridge. Without co-channel interference, they could put their signal out much further than KHHT managed from up there.

Coming down the Grapevine heading into Mettler, 93.7 KSKS would be blasting away, until they added that 93.7 LP Spanish in Shafter not long ago. The fun of Dxing stations is OVER!

Or east of Arvin in Bear Mountain?

It's still there if you know where to look. South of Lebec (elevation 3,000') KSKS will quickly take over from K229CD, and on a good day will reach Pyramid Lake (well into LA county).

Lately I've been driving a spare car that only has radio (which suits me just fine), and have been driving back and forth from Bakersfield to LA often. When passing thru the mountain section of the 5, I have to remind myself to pay attention to the road, as I happily switch between Fresno, LA, and Tijuana stations, sometimes with 103.3 KVYB Santa Barbara as a bonus.
(Fresno: 93.7, 92.9, 94.9, 104.1 LA: 92.3, 93.1, 94.7, 95.5, 104.3 TJ: 90.3, 91.1, 92.5)

Yes, that's true. I remember once at night, I'd pull over to rest at I-5 and Calgrove Blvd in Santa Clarita and 93.7 KSKS was CLEAR!

Yes I have received from Santa Clarita to Frazier Park all Eshom Point Stations including KSEQ 97.1 KFRR 104.1 KBOS 94.9 KSOF 98.9 and many more , from the Valley Floor KFBT 103.7.

For the past month, KHHT has been using their new 1,400 watt transmitter on Wheeler Ridge, next to the 99/5 split.
A few days ago I had the chance to drive north, and KHHT drops off rapidly past Bakersfield. There's bad co-channel interference with KSOF around Lerdo Highway. And from McFarland north, 98.9 is KSOF.

On the east side of Bakersfield, the signal is excellent. But the further west you go, the more KSOF still steps on KHHT, especially when driving on north/south roads.
Oddly, according to the FCC, the station is still "silent".

Edit: the format is still 80s/90s R&B and old school. It seems to be a syndicated "piped in" presentation. (Idk the correct term for it.)

This past week, KHHT added hosts for the morning and evening hours. I'm not sure if they're live or voice tracked, but this is the first time to have on air staff since the station signed on.
For a year, there's been ad breaks, but all the spots are public service announcements (like from NHTSA).

It was a foggy day here in the south valley, causing some good dx reception. One station I received was 98.3 KZLA from Riverdale (Fresno).
After a moment I realized it's the same exact station as 98.9 KHHT.
That explains the addition of the DJs.
For some of KZLA's ad breaks, KHHT plays psa's, or another song.

Even though the 2 stations have a "different owner" name, the address are the same,2284 S. Victoria Street, Ventura CA. there may be a 3rd station in Southern CA.

Oh yeah, as Tiger Cox said above...KHHT's owner "Point Five, LLC" is the same exact company as KZLA's owner, "Riverdale Broadcasting LLC"

I hear KZLA 98.3 From Wyoming this past summer. Here's the audio:
