Hubbard's 98.9 flipped to Country

Guess someone over at Hubbard must’ve listened to KMPS and gave station management a great idea... and this was the end result. Talk about a quick turn of events!

Couldn't they have come up with something better than "Country"?

It's been a great brand for decades in many markets. Country music fans are proud to be fans and proud of the core values of country living they see country music as representing. You really can't go wrong with that branding, especially when the options are becoming just another Bull, Wolf or Frog.

And I thought Robert Mueller can get things to flip....SHEESH!

Wow, I guess that's that, huh? Not that it matters up where I live where 98.9 is part of the AM revitalization and is called KBAY.

Too bad for rock fans, but that's the breaks. I know I'm not the only one who enjoyed 98.9 Rock's mix of 90's and 00's rock hits, along with some of the better 80's stuff.

So that's the third format flip since they stopped Smooth Jazz in late 2010. I'm hoping the ex-KMPS listeners will easily change their playlists and their ratings should go up. Maybe they can continue 94.1's former tradition of sprinkling '90s and early '00s songs. Or will KKWF start to sprinkle some older stuff?

Probably not in Seattle....

Meanwhile, KMPS' morning team is looking for work. Country Aircheck reports they're out, but PD Kenny Jay is still on staff.

I wonder if the discarded on air staff from KMPS will be picked up by 98.9, or what ever moniker they want to use. (Just calling it 'Country 98-9' seems so stale.)

There are those dreaded non-competes....

True...but are they really enforceable if the station gets 'canned'? I can see it if the air staff quits. (Of course this all depends on the contract, and all parties agreeing to what is written in the contract.)

It's often a condition of getting severance, and from what I've read, that's involved here.

Yes, that is true, but country on 98.9 will most likely be the format that can compete and make money for Hubbard in this market. If marketed properly, they can win, or at least compete with KKWF like in the days KMPS vs. KRPM.

If you look at the Hubbard country stations in other cities, they are VERY successful, and compete against country stations owned by iHeart and Cumulus. They know how to compete and win.
