in defense of rock/alternative formats

Gunsmoke

Banned
According to the vast majority of Alternative haters and their are many, who constantly bash the one outlet in a 100 miles radius, where urban formats loom. To appease you all, WRFF should just flip to Rap and Blazing Hip Hop to add to the wasteland of underperforming urban formats on the dial. Then you can all set your sites on your next target, MMR, geeze give it a rest already I get it, you salivate over urban flavored stations, and if you had your way any form of Rock would be banned from the dial. There are people who love and listen to Rock even if the suits don't support it, so why starve them, you have your variety of urban formats including the new 106.1, which you all embrace, be satisfied. Contrary to your and others beliefs, why are the three Rock outlets here constantly in the top 5 every period and always above the 4.0 mark, I rest my case. Why doesn't anyone ever say anything demeaning about any urban format here, and if they do, its well, why don't they flip to another blend of urban LMAO.

Donald? Is that you?

OK. Snark aside, and even though this is getting to Julius levels of obsession, I'll bite.

Incorrect. Within a 100 mile radius you have Alt 92.3 in NYC, 107.1 Spin Radio north of Allentown, and just on the edge of that range, the translator that WHFS lives on near Baltimore.

No one has said that. At all. All they've pointed out is how WRFF's billings greatly underperforms it's ratings, and that's a problem that Alternative stations (save for a handful of long-term legendary stations) face across the country. Plus, I wouldn't consider any of the Urban formats in Philly as "under-performing." WDAS and Power 99 hum nicely along. WRNB has shown signs of life, and Praise 107.9 and Boom 103.9 are billing about as well as one would expect with such tiny signals.

if you had your way any form of Rock would be banned from the dial.

Not me personally. WRFF and WMMR are the top of my presets. That's just speaking for me personally.

You seem to have trouble grasping that radio is a business, and regardless if there are people who love and listen to rock, if they're not a profitable segment of the population, you won't have stations targeting them. You could argue that plenty of people in the Philadelphia area like polka, so why starve them of a station targeting their tastes? Because of the $$. Along the same lines, in Philly, you have a variety of Rock formats, including WMMR, WRFF, WMGK, WBEN, WRFF-HD2, and WIP-HD3. Be Satisfied.

Contrary to your and others beliefs, why are the three Rock outlets here constantly in the top 5 every period and always above the 4.0 mark

Again, you seem to have trouble grasping the business end. No one has disputed the ratings of WMMR, WMGK, or WRFF. But it's about the ability to turn those ratings into money. This isn't contrary to my or others beliefs.

Why doesn't anyone ever say anything demeaning about any urban format here, and if they do, its well, why don't they flip to another blend of urban LMAO.

Well, this is me making an assumption, but the majority of the people who post on this board are white males, who are not the target demographic of Urban stations, and don't listen to them. So unless the ratings of Urban stations radically change, they go mostly unnoticed to the common poster. But members of this board DO listen to the rock-formatted stations, and in doing so, nitpick any little change that there may be, leading to more scrutiny and more posts about it.

I rest my case.

No you don't. Because you started yet another thread about it.

Paranoia much?! You're literally making things up. No one's been saying these things you're railing against. And by the way, you are way more openly anti-ethnic (ahem) and anti-urban (ahem ahem) than anyone here is anti-rock. Go back and read your posts. The agenda is barely even veiled.

My neighbor who's wife works in advertising at avenue of the america's and commutes from Philly where the spots/advertisers are purchased and incorporated (not philadelphia) said they are very pleased with the overall performance of WRFF. That says it all not going anywhere, next subject...lets please stop downgrading WRFF...Donald who LMFAO

No one has stated that iHeart is planning to flip WRFF. If they did, they would have flipped it already (and probably before they flipped Mix.) All we've stated is that their billing is low, regardless of their ratings. But thank you for telling us you'll move on to the next subject and stop creating threads about it yourself.

Repeating atthestars point: nobody has suggested that WRFF is going to change format.

The comments that have been made address the fact that WRFF does not bill well compared to the ratings it gets.

In the industry, we use a metric called the "Power Ratio". If a station has a 5 share of audience and gets 5% of the radio revenue in the market, it is said to have a 1.0 power ration as the revenue and ratings share match.

WBEB, the market revenue leader, gets a 1.1 power ratio... it slightly outperforms its share of audience. WMMR has a 1.2 power ratio indicating it does 20% better in converting share to revenue. WDAS has a 1.2 as well, indicating really good performance in sales.

WRFF has a 0.3 power ration, indicating that it only gets 30% of it's proportional "fair share" of revenue.

There are clients who find WRFF is a good fit with their consumers. The issue is that there are not many such clients. And that is not "dissing" the format or the station... it is just stating the fact that the station under performs in revenue generation.

What does "where the spots/advertisers are purchased and incorporated" mean?

I'll give in...why do you have a constant obsession over this? Salty much? We get it, you don't like urban. Whatever.

Despite actual people who work in the industry striking down your "points", you still want to argue about this?
