Disney In Houston

So I’m reading that with the purchase of 20th Century Fox that FOX will still own MY NETWORK TV and also KRIV here in houston.

What will happen in these channels? What will air on them?

Nothing will change. Disney has purchased the studios. The FOX TV network, FOX-owned TV stations, FOX News are not in the deal.

Actually, Disney has purchased the studio content, not the physical studio. Fox retains ownership of the Fox Studios lot on W Pico, but has signed a 7 year lease to Disney.

True. FOX studio content is most important to Disney. Disney has their own studios. I'm not at all sure why they even want to lease the FOX studios.

The only reason I see is because some of the active shows they are buying (The Simpsons and a few others) are done on the Fox Studios lot. It's easier to just leave them in their existing facilities than move them to Burbank or Glendale. The 7 year period allows them time to absorb the production of the shows, especially the animation, in their own facilities.

So Disney now owns the content, again my question what will air on KRIV? Will they just have shows from CBS like Big Bang Theory ect??

The FOX network programs should remain the same. Syndicated programs which air on KRIV should also remain the same.
At some point, the program contracts will expire and they will be re-negotiated.
This is true for both network programs and local syndicated programs.

Disney will own what is traditionally called "the film library". That is, all the shows and movies and such that the film studio produced over many, many decades. Content that is under contract with other entities, such as Fox TV or Netflix or cable channels will continue to run under those contracts. That includes any Fox Studios content being sold to TV TV in internal inter-company transactions.

Disney, of course, does not own any of this yet. The deal requires extensive regulatory review as well as traditional due diligence. It will take time to come together.

The Fox TV Network and its owned stations are not being sold. Fox self-produces some of its shows with the division that is now being sold. Other Fox shows are produced by third parties, which are contracted with the network, not with the movie production company.

All the "Big 4" networks have a combination of in-house productions and outside producers. I believe that I just read that CBS, for example, gets about 50% of its prime programming from third party sources.

It's likely we will soon see indication of how the Fox TV network will source its original programming on an ongoing basis. There are indications that Murdoch wants to put more emphasis on sports and news, which are less subject to streaming and delayed viewing due to timeliness. So we might see Fox TV move away from scripted shows and much more into live events and news.

The biggest hurdle in the Fox Disney deal will be the RSN's like Fox Sports West in Los Angeles. There were articles that said that the Fox Sports Regional channels might go to Disney if the deal is approved. Also there leadership change at ESPN that has just taken place yesterday and how this new leader of ESPN is going to make the regional RSN's shift to the objectives of Disney.

For Houston specifically KTRK ABC 13 will remain with Disney. Also Disney will keep the ABC affiliation for their O&O's like KABC/WABC/KGO/WLS. Note no duopoly will take place between ABC and Fox since the Fox Owned stations like KTVU, KTTV, KRIV and WNYW were not included in the Disney deal.

The intent as far as I was aware of was that the Fox Television Stations division wanted to go after Sinclair stations in some parts of the country and remove the Fox affiliation in Sinclair/Tribune markets and place the Fox affiliation somewhere else in those areas.

For Disney the reason for the Fox/disney deal was to go after Netflix, YouTube and Time Warner for content.

Might? The 22 RSNs are currently part of the deal. Looking at the coverage map, Fox RSNs cover about half of the states in the country. Some very lucrative RSNs are not owned by Fox, including NESN in Boston, MASN in Washington-Baltimore, Comcast in Philadelphia & NJ, and Root in Seattle. It may be tough to call the combination of the Fox RSNs and ESPN a monopoly. They may have to spin off Prime Ticket. The fact that Fox is keeping it's version of ESPN (FS1) will be helpful for regulatory reasons.
