Cliff Winston Suffers Massive Heart Attack (December 20, 2017) Cliff Winston, veteran of KJLH and KKBT, has died of a massive heart attack. The personable and talented personality and program director passed away yesterday, according to Kevin Ross publisher of the trade publication, Radio Facts.

Cliff grew up in Southern California and originally intended to be a sportscaster. He attended the University of Washington and started his radio career at KYAC-Seattle doing both drive times. He moved to KMJM-St. Louis, followed by a stint at WBMX-Chicago and was pd at WDRQ-Detroit. KRLY-Houston was his last stop before joining KJLH. Cliff was "the Beat’s" (KKBT) first morning man and public affairs director and in late 1993 rejoined KJLH in morning drive, where he had spent 13 years. In the summer of 1995, Cliff was appointed pd of KJLH. The Urban Network has recognized him as air personality of the year. In 1999 he was named as Air Personality of the Year by Black Radio Exclusive Magazine.

Not to detract from Mr. Winston's passing, but the term "massive heart attack" is something we should get rid of. How do we know how massive a heart attack might be? If it kills you, it's massive? If it doesn't, it's mild? I've never heard a report that someone died of a mild heart attack, or survived a massive heart attack.

I guess the only way to know is to do an autopsy and find out how many blood vessels may have been blocked. Is there a certain number of blockages that pushes the dial from mild to massive? But I doubt an autopsy has been done when the term "massive heart attack" is used. No knock on Hot Hits, who simply copied the wording of the news story into this post.
