Your 2018 general TV predictions (or guesses)

Any predictions (or guesses) on what 2018 might have in store for any aspects of television in general? Such as new stations (if any), sign-offs, station consolidations, program cancellations/ratings, cable channel rebrands/shutdowns, ownership matters, cable/satellite operations, etc.

I'm going to go onto a limb and make a few general guesses:

--Super Bowl LII on NBC Feb. 4 will be among the lowest-rated Super Bowls since 2000. Some major advertisers will announce plans to pull out of SB LIII after this year's ratings disaster.

--Lower ratings than in recent years will spread to most other major sporting events (e.g., Winter Olympics, World Series, NBA Finals, College Football Playoff, maybe even the NCAA men's basketball tournament). As well as awards shows (e.g., Oscars, Tonys, Grammys) and Miss America.

--The cancellation of "General Hospital" and/or "Days of Our Lives" will be announced (final show either next December or at the end of the 2018-19 season). Which will put ABC and/or NBC out of the soap business. (I will go on a further limb and predict both shows will be cancelled if not this year, by the end of 2019).

--NBC fires Megyn Kelly

--At least one long-running cable network shuts down

--At least one Netlet will be cancelled nationally

--More sexual harassment scandals/charges

--The Disney/Fox deal will lead to the cancellation of "The Simpsons," either after this current season or the 2018-19 season (its cancellation will be announced this year).

--There will be at least one major cable provider that will take significant steps toward converting their system to an all-HD lineup in some markets (other than network still only available in SD). If so I predict Comcast will do this--including no longer offering SD converter boxes to new customers.

--There will also be at least one large or even major city (one at least 10,000 population) that will lose their cable system entirely. This may even happen much closer to home to me than I think: http://www.sj-r.com/news/20171110/springfield-in-talks-with-comcast-to-collect-underpayment-of-fees

Any other predictions for TV in 2018 that you want to throw out there?

I will go further and predict that this will also mean the cancellation of the remaining current Sunday Fox animation shows: "Family Guy" and "Bob's Burgers" in addition to Homer, Bart and Co. And immediately afterward there will be an announcement that at least one of these shows will be available exclusively on Netflix (if so I say Simpsons and Family Guy).

UPDATE: The Simpsons has been already renewed through 2020--but I will predict that it will be announced in 2018 that the "Simpsons" will move exclusively to Netflix starting in fall 2020, or cancelled entirely at that time.

Wow....not much positive on your list. Might as well just pack it in.

I will predict that it will be announced in 2018 that the "Simpsons" will move exclusively to Netflix starting in fall 2020, or cancelled entirely at that time.

Keep in mind that all of the Fox animation will be owned by Disney, and Disney is building their own streaming site to compete against Netflix. So if these shows go anywhere else, it will be there, not Netflix.

NBC will lose money on the Olympics because of the time delay and their hate for showing anything live. SB ratings will be fine, they always are. As long as the matchup is good. Isn't Days renewed for another 2 years? Not sure about GH. The Simpsons was also renewed for 2 years so they won't cancel until the contract is up. And I would imagine Disney brining the Simpsons characters to the theme parks so why cancel them.

SD programing should be shut down across the board and just down convert the HD feeds to the legacy viewers. Most new converter boxes are already HD ready.

Well, DirecTV is shutting down their SD services in 2019. That means anyone with the old triple-LNB dishes will lose service if they don't upgrade to the Slimline's. Dish Network is no longer providing new SD subscriptions but many customers still have their old Dish 500 SD antennas. They have not announced an 'end date' for standard-definition service.

Also next on the list for 2018 here is that Sinclair/Tribune deal gets approved.

But the rumors of New Sinclair Network will come into play and the fight over Pro-Trump Audiences will continue.

The "Fox Television Stations division" will debate over spinning My Network TV to Ion.

The Time Inc/Meredith deal is approved and cleared before the Time Warner/AT&t deal is cleared. My Prediction HLN will have to be sold from AT&T/Time Warner over to Time Meredith yes the owners of WGCL Atlanta and WPCH Atlanta.

Sinclair will rename WGN America to the Sinclair Network once they take over the Tribune stations like WGN,KTLA, WPIX and KTXL notably.

Fox considering to take KCPQ from Sinclair because its in an NFC market.

This has been brought up in other threads, but it makes sense. Fox affiliate KCPQ is strong with the Seattle NFL team. But I thought it was a Tribune/Sinclair thing, not a Fox thing. If the merger is approved, (and it is likely), then Sinclair might dump KOMO for this very reason, unless they are somehow able to keep both, which is unlikely.

my predictions:

one big TV company bails out iHeartRadio or Cumulus from folding with Cumulus already filed for bankruptcy.

AT&T/Time Warner merger is either finally approved but either DirecTV or Turner Networks is sold off to make the DOJ or it is canceled and and both sides gives up and tries to merge wit another company instead.

Sinclair/Tribune merger gets completed

New Japan Pro Wrestling breaks though and causes a new pro wrestling war between them and WWE while the Japanese wrestling promotion continues it's North American expansion.

speaking of WWE, they will be sold to either Disney or NBCUniversal/Comcast, which NBCU wants WWE to keep it on USA past it's current deal which ends in 2019.

the Russia investigation leads to Trump being impeached and his trial be televised to the highest rating of all the news channels during the duration of said impeachment trial.

The Weather Channel gets a big ratings boom during Hurricane season as it will be the first one since Harvey, Irma and Maria caused billions of dollars in damage, but the Hurricane season winds up being like 2006, a big bust for major hurricanes after a very bad hurricane season the previous year.

the first 24/7 4K TV network launches on a Cable provider.

Cumulus is already, apparently, on its way to full creditor agreements during its Chapter 11 reorganization and there are even predictions it will emerge from bankruptcy as soon as March as a viable company.

iHeart is taking steps to initiate the same process, with secured lenders becoming the significant equity owners. This could also result in a very viable company as, like Cumulus, they have positive EBITDA on broadcast and new media operations.

Time Meredith will take the Turner Networks division from Time Warner/ At&t.

Also Alex Jones and Infowars could face more lawsuits in 2018 over spreading false allegations.

Which TV company wants to bail out Cumulus and Iheart. is it Hearst, Tegna, Gray, Scripps, Raycom? I doubt Nexstar or Sinclair would want to do that though.

NBATV gets to also show Draft live,be like ÑHL Draft and at same site as NHL Draft is with Teams announcing picks/ GM's on the floor talking Trades, finally gets on CCI. Sprectrumsportskc gets on Lineups outside of KC viewing area. All Cable systems finally pick up Yes Network,NESN,SYN,Sun Sports and so on.

A National Channel starts in Orlando that has local News on it. 38 the Spot turns into a National Channel with Syndicated programming/Newscast/Sports. TBS does a remake of Senfield. HGTV or DYI one of Home Improvement.

Accuweather and Weathernation National Feed starts popping up on Cable Systems. ABC turns Fusion intill a real News Channel. CBS converts one of it's Channel to a News Channel. More local News Channels pop up. Somebody purchases Weatherscan like Scripps and get Sound in background. CBS Sportsline starts a show to complete against Sportscenter or even a channel like Weatherscan that has a Sportsticker on the Bottom. Fox Sports 1,NBCSN,CBS Sportsline also show NFL Draft live. MLB Draft like NHL Draft, moved to Trade Deadline so then their would be Trades in it then GM's can talk Trades on the floor because all other Sports have their Drafts in Offseason, shown also on TBS,Fox,ESPN.

Meredith starts it's own group and purchases GETTV,Decades,Buzzrtv and so on to be part of it. My Network TV Starts it's own Digital Sub Channels one for each Decaded and gets into Primetime programming. CW adds Weekend Primetime programming.

I'll predict that in light of the outrage over the removal of Weatherscan from all of their systems (my area included), Comcast will (albeit begrudgingly) add one of either Accuweather or Weathernation to most of their lineups (placing it primarily on Weatherscan's former channel spot).

ESPN will botch the take over of the Fox Regional sports networks and not know what to do with them.
ESPN will continue to lose subscribers as more people cut the cord and the new streaming service doesn't catch on like expected.

Fox News Channel will have to deal with a certain number of Pundits leaving the Network for Sinclair and the rivalry between Pro-Trump audiences will heat up.

Fox Sports regional will have a certain number of pundits move to ESPN or have some of their pundits move to Fox Sports national edition.

Some of my predictions. Who knows if they will come true, we'll see.

- CBS announces 'The Big Bang Theory' will conclude its run at the end of season 12 (2018-19), it was renewed to that date.
- More sexual harassment charges lead to shows we never expected being cancelled or pulled from reruns.
- ABC's 'The Good Doctor' will be renewed for season 2 ASAP, due to high ratings and praise with Freddie Highmore's character of an autistic doctor
- Fox will change MyNetworkTV into a repeat network for Fox shows and change the name to 'Fox Plus,' like what they have been doing to some of the MNTV O&Os.
- Alex Trebek announces his retirement from Jeopardy! and a new host is picked before September.
- Jerry Springer and Maury are both cancelled. (Praying, praying, praying...)

YES has managed to keep its independent identity after being punched by Fox. I wonder if they keep it during the transition to ESPN. Being the biggest regional in the country and based on the Yankees, brand identity means more to them than the other smaller networks. I wonder if ESPN realizes this and will let them be. They already have cross promotion with The Micheal Kay Show on ESPN Radio.
