Jon Gruden, ESPN's sticky situation

So Gruden is broadcasting the AFC Wildcard game for ESPN, but is also expected to become the head coach of the Raiders on Monday. The network is reporting on Gruden the head coach while also talking about him as a broadcaster on the network. How much of a tightrope are they walking here?

I remember when Dan Marino was working for CBS, it had been announced that he was in talks to become the GM of an NFL team. He did his job as a commentator, and then was asked about the rumors of the GM job. It's one of those things. In Gruden's case, he could resign from ESPN, and avoid the split responsibility. Or he could do his final game for ESPN. It's not like there's a conflict of interest until he begins work at the new job.

Don't forget that he will be interviewing both coaches to talk game plan. They said it wasn't an issue but I could see how they would not want to talk to him about strategy.

They might want to talk about SALARY! Not strategy. Ha! He just said "Nothing's official yet."

It'll probably be equally awkward when he's interviewed for his first MNF game next season.

Shefter is reporting that it's a done deal. Gruden is talking like nothing is happening.

Living in Knoxville, TN through 2 University of Tennessee coaching searches, and the #Grumors ran rampant both times. "Jon Gruden has been spotted at (local BBQ place) with Peyton Manning signing papers!" Supposedly "the big money donors have inked the deal behind the scenes" for Gruden's imminent arrival on Rocky Top. Gruden trolled the fan base as well. Most people played along for fun, but there were true believers.

Here in the San Francisco area the Gruden Rumors people here thought this was the Raiders Management making a ploy to sell season passes to the Las Vegas stadium. But so far those things are too much of a stretch for me to put together though.

I think Vegas is part of it. Gruden will sell tickets at first, but he has to put a winning product on the field. This is a huge contract and a big gamble for both of them.

And the real problem is the team will play in Oakland at least one more season, maybe two. During that time, people will form impressions that might color what happens when they actually move to Vegas. I think the team will sell tickets simply because people go to Vegas to see and do things. More tickets will be sold to visitors than to local residents. This isn't a team that will be aiming at regular people who live and work in Las Vegas.

Who is going to Vegas Knight games? Is it more tourists or locals?

Hard to say, but we know that a lot of season tickets were bought by the casinos as bonuses for high rollers. And when I search Knights Attendance, I get this:

"According to ESPN, Vegas is third in the NHL in overall arena capacity percentage with a 102.6 percent capacity through 17 home games. That translates to an average of 17,810 fans per game, above T-Mobile Arena’s announced hockey capacity of 17,500."

Of course, the Knights are doing amazingly well for their first year as a team. Gruden's Raiders won't debut in Vegas, but Oakland. I think there would be less pressure for Gruden if he debuted as a coach in Vegas rather than Oakland.

I guess ESPN can have Gruden back if they want him. Barely 4 years into his 10 year Head Coach contract with the Raiders and he's out the door for e-mails that he'd written over a 10 year period that included anti-gay slurs, racial epithets to describe sometimes higher level people within the NFL, criticism of gay inclusion, female referees and the league's tolerance of protests against racism during the National Anthem.

The emails, which span from 2010 until 2018, when the coach signed a 10-year deal with Las Vegas after years as a "Monday Night Football" analyst, include Gruden calling Goodell a "f-----" and "clueless anti-football p----," criticizing Goodell for allegedly pressuring then-Rams coach Jeff Fisher to draft "queers," and messages to Allen that featured photos of topless Washington Football Team cheerleaders.

Wanna bet he'll be featured at future rallies for a certain former president and his ilk? He seems to be a perfect fit for their system of values and 'Murica!

So I guess he won't be coaching at the University of Tennessee? (Every time they fire a coach or want to fire a coach, the #Grumors start that he's in the running, the alumni have already hired him, he's been seen around town, etc).

Interestingly, after (at least) a decade-long pattern of degrading gays, blacks, women, those who take a stand on social issues, executive management at the NFL and others, and using the strongest derogatory and slang terms to describe them, AND being stupid and short-sighted enough to put all those comments in writing, I still saw people on social media today making statements like "Gruden's situation just goes to show that you can't say anything about anyone anymore, without people getting offended".

But of course.... You stay classy, Newsmax!

Newsmax Host Greg Kelly Defends Ousted Raiders Coach Jon Gruden: ‘White Men Are Under Attack’

Newsmax’s Greg Kelly defended former Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden Tuesday night by railing against Gruden’s resignation, which came after it was revealed he’d used sexist and racist language in emails. In one of the reported emails, Gruden used the homophobic f-word to describe NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

Kelly insisted that in the era in which he and Gurden grew up, culture was just different: “The f-word that rhymes with maggot was in wide use and circulation and it didn’t get you cancelled.”

Jon Gruden is a great coach and I'm not a fan of the Raiders. He was merely caught
using derogatory and offensive language in emails. In essence, he wrote down what
many people think but do not verbalize. We are coming to mind control and thought
police.......
