Could stations lose cable carriage once they start sharing with a Class A?

Look what's happening at KTLN San Francisco as it moves to KAXT-CD's stick:

On October 25, 2017, [OTA Broadcasting] submitted an application on FCC Form 2100 for [KTLN-TV] to channel share with commonly-owned KAXT-CD, which the Commission granted on November 1, 2017...After sending notifications to multichannel video programming distributors (“MVPDs”) that currently carry the Station’s signal, however, certain MVPDs informed the Licensee that KAXT-CD does not provide a good quality signal to their headend location.

KTLN would lose coverage in the North Bay, thus giving an excuse for cable systems there to drop the station for lack of a signal.

We're seeing a handful of full-power stations about to share with Class As, which would no longer make them "full-power" stations. Look at WTBY New York, WMFP Boston, WWTO Chicago, WTVE Philly, etc. Do you think these stations and others will lose cable carriage in outlying areas once they move to their new sites?

Its no different than what is currently being done. If a MVPD cant get a good signal OTA or if there isn't a way to get the station then it cant be carried.

Hell SelectiveTv (the OTA system in Alexandria, MN) posted how the signal gets from Minneapolis to their towers
The signals travel over the air from the twin cities to a building in St. Cloud, from there they travel via fiber optic to the old KCMT building in downtown Alexandria, from there they are microwaved to the Selective TV transmitter building, processed and then sent out to your antenna from the Selective TV antenna.

Here in LA, I think KAZA is now sharing with a class A but they are still being carried by all the cable and satellite companies.

Don't many cable companies use DirecTV or Dish Network to get their locals?

no. Most have some type of fibre connection or worse case they get it OTA

Now if you're talking some podunk cable system....then it is possible. I've seen analog translators use Directv receivers. Yes there are some analog translators in Minnesota yet

Boston is a full-power share on WWDP, just moving from a full-market U to a south-of-the-city V signal.

Well it's the same thing: WMFP would get dropped from cable systems in the northern part of the market. Also, full-market WYDN is sharing with New Hampshire-based WPXG, and it could lose carriage in the southern part of the market.

All it takes is for the cable company to let the station know they can't pick it up over the air, so they can't carry it anymore.

Unless you are dealing with a podunk cable system....most systems have a way of getting a signal. They can use fibre or microwave connections

That's for the major stations (network affiliates, etc.). The smaller stations are usually picked up over the air.
