WBZC- Z88.9 to sign off and go internet-only

Rowan College at Burlington County has announced that Z88.9 WBZC will sign off next week, and they will launch an online only RCBC Radio.

Not surprised that they're signing off as they sold off all the translators recently, but they couldn't find a buyer for the full-power signal?

Press release: http://mailchi.mp/rcbc/rowan-colleg...amming-with-launch-of-rcbc-radio?e=11f8fe86f9

Is FM below 92.1 saturated with Christian broadcasters already in that part of the country? If not, I'm surprised that some ministry somewhere hasn't snapped it up yet.

Too bad. Rowan University has a pretty good Radio/TV department, with some pretty well-known alumni. Shutting down this radio station and moving it all online makes the student experience less professional. The reason I say that is most online radio stations aren't places where students can get jobs. So I don't know that training students in online radio is something they can use as experience for a job. I think this move will make Rowan University's Radio/TV department less competitive with schools that have actual broadcast radio stations on campus.

Actually I forgot that Rowan owned two radio stations...this one and WGLS. They're keeping WGLS and selling this one. This is the station with the better signal. 10,000 watts vs 600 watts.

Still the idea that they're "modernizing their programming" with online radio is crazy. Yes, people listen to music with online streams. That mainly means online unhosted streams of music from various services like Pandora, Apple Music, and Spotify. That's not what this is. People aren't giving up unhosted music streams so they can hear college kids playing their favorite songs. Why would I want to listen to your iPod? Makes no sense to me.

So it must definitely be a dollars-and-cents issue. Gotta cut that power bill.

So they're cutting the power bill, and increasing their music royalty costs. Is it worth the trade-off?

They could tip the balance in their favor by playing less music, I suppose, going to the kind of community/fringe/radical talk I hear on WESU (Wesleyan University) Middletown, CT, for example.

That's not what their press release says. It basically says "we're modernizing our programming by duplicating Pandora." So they're pouring old wine in a brand new bottle expecting it to taste better.

Z88.9 died to me four years ago when they stopped the dance music. This is just the nail in the coffin.

Rowan Collage at Burlington is actually the old Burlington County College, just like each of the counties in NJ have/had. It's now just under the Rowan umbrella. So, yes, the licensees would be different.

I read a story yesterday where RCBC is advising students who want to continue in broadcasting to transfer to Rowan University.

I'm still offended by the view in the RCBC press release that this move from on air to online will "modernize the programming." It won't do anything of the kind. Total spin.

Z88.9 is off the air. Transmitter is off. R.I.P. Z88.9
It was on life support since 2014 and they finally pulled the plug on the 10000 watt transmitter last night.
I won't forget the memories I had listening to z88.9 in its glory days, from the first day I discovered it in August 2006 (I even remembered the first song I heard on it). I remember the multiple bike rides from Bordentown to Atlantic City listening to Z88.9 the whole way. And I won't forget picking it up on tropo all the way in Long Island!

Was that press release from Sarah Huckabee Sanders?

The good ol days of picking them up every Friday night to my Seaside gigs. Now if only Party 732 was on a frequency 😁

88.9 is still off the air. I'm surprised it hasn't sold yet.
I would love to win the lottery, buy the station, and bring the real Z88.9 back
