Joe Ligotti Returns

Joe Ligotti returns to the airwaves on February 6th. Along with a guy named Chris Palermo he will host a 4pm to 7pm weekday show on WROL.

I would assume they are buying the time.

Buying time to go up against Howie Carr..... ya let me know how that is going to work out.

WROL AM has a 90 watt night signal that barely covers Boston from the middle of nowhere, and as of now their translator is not up and running.... Going to be a blast in the winter months.

I hope his MASSPORT pension check is enough to cover his losses.

Think I heard the translator is to go on next month.Heads up to the Big City 100.3 pirate folks.
Ligotti was on 96.9 FM Talk. His stay at WMEX 1510 lasted a month in '15.

Did you see the new logo in the link: "950AM WROL 100.3FM The Spirit Of Boston" (the old logo is just "950AM WROL The Spirit Of Boston").

Who? Never heard of him. What is WROL? Vanity Radio. You've got the buck we've got the time.

They paid him. What's this guy's excuse? Is he a MassPort Hack with connection?

Did some podcast commentaries on youtube with language the FCC doesn't permit.
When WMEX launched a new lineup in early June 2015, they really emphasized Joe's morning show plus Michele McPhee. Photo had them kissing etc. Joe did an emergency fill in for McPhee when she got arrested for DUI.Ligotti was fired on July 10 of '15, with no reason really given, and sued the MEX guys claiming he had a long term contract.

The Renegade Radio guys (one a 1% station owner related to one of the major owners) then shifted to Joe's morning slot.

Universal Hub:"Joe Ligotti, who's made a career out of being a cigar-chomping loudmouth, is suing WMEX over the way he says he was secretly fired last year.WMEX hired the Guy from Boston away from a weekend slot on WTKK last June, had him do the station's morning drive show, then ditched him a little more than a month later.
In a lawsuit filed last week in US District Court in Boston, Ligotti says WMEX gave him a three-year contract with an annual salary of $70,000 plus a cut of advertising revnue. But he charges the station's owners really only wanted his name to boost ratings for a bit as they tried to sell the station.

"He alleges that after taking him off the air, the station made up stories about him being out for unspecified medical reasons or vacation and kept using his name and likeness to promote its morning show in an attempt to keep its ratings up. He charges station owners made up stories that he "engaged in sexual harassment."

WROL is always having a hard time filling those mid-afternoon/PM drive spots for anything that makes money.

I think you will see what many AM stations with translators do....drop the entire identity of the AM, and focus on the FM signal being the product. And the FM signal, Like Bloomberg's 106.1, is steady over Boston all the time. (No one even will care about the 90 watt AM in Winter.)

I don't think he is competing for ratings against Howie.

To make this work, all he needs is a couple of sponsors to pay his minimal expenses...which is probably the purchase of time. (Unlike Howie who has staffers to pay, rent, TV feeds, etc.)

They paid him.

I don't believe it.

They did. JW would NEVER work for free.

As to this Ligotti is he the rather obese individual who looks like he came out of the Soprano's ?
Mixed movie metaphor but maybe he made WROL an offer they couldn't refuse.

From Jerry's bio, Burning Up the Air. It mentions WROL and Alex Canavan, saying the station had a good spot on the dial and some power, and Alex rented out time. It says Alex asked Jerry if he'd be up to do one hour per day, 2-3 pm, if he was up to it.They could even do Friday's live from Tecce's.

"Incredibly, he did it. On 12/2/02, he started the new show, sitting in a wheelchair from a studio in...Marina Bay. The voice was as thin as his hair. Canavan knew right away it wasn't going to last. Over the next few months, Jerry was on the air less and less. By February, the ROL experiment was done."

Then it says Jerry was invited back to RKO one last time, on March 1 of that year. Jerry died in April of that year, 2003.

You contradict yourself! : "What is WROL? Vanity Radio. You've got the buck we've got the time."

And Salem would never pay anyone. ;-)

JW had a big ego, as you will admit, and might not have wanted anyone to know he (or a benefactor) was covering the cost.

I haven't listened to WROL in literally DECADES.

By any chance, Is Roy Masters still doing his thing on 950? I remember back in the 1990's, his show ran on WROL, and the "good-riddance-to-bad-rubbish" 990-WALE.

Since WROL does not subscribe, there will be no ratings data.... I don't even know if they encode, but you hit the nail on the head, it is about getting sponsors, and I think thy are going to be hard to come by, and they are not going to be willing to pay big dollars for what little they might get.

I wonder if Joe can do Tradio with Two Guys Smoke Shop for some cigars?

Dunkin Donuts?

I wondered the same thing. 90 year old Roy Masters is still on the WROL schedule during the day and overnights. A Google search of Masters shows he was arrested for assault and battery at the Talk Radio Network offices this past September.

I always enjoyed Steve Sweeney's impression of Roy Masters although I think Iwas the only one in the audience who knew who he was doing.

I used to listen to TKK extensively years ago on weekends, the lineup was pretty decent, it wasn't a bunch of "financial planners" attempting to sell you annuities like you hear today on various talk stations. Ligotti's show with "Huggy" was entertaining -- but not as entertaining as the Phantom Gourmet guys who came on later, who often had me in stitches -- dangerous when I was on the roof re-shingling the house and I would be laughing my ass off on a 10/12 pitch :) Maybe I am confusing the timeline, but I thought Ligotti's show ended when TKK swapped from the talk format, and not because he was "hired away" from TKK.

His time on MEX was strange. Given his on-air persona, I wouldn't find it outside the realm of possibility he would say/do something and find himself in hot water with HR, especially with the snowflakes you have today. I never believed the rumors he "sexually harassed" McPhee, I think it'd be far more likely she'd hand him his manly-parts in a paper bag if he ever did.

Don't know if I could stand listening to him 5 days a week, the one show a week on TKK was okay. I suppose I may give it a try if all of a sudden Whitey does manage to whack Howie, and his show is no longer on in the same time frame.
