NBC Boston declares Jaguars AFC Champions

The big letters say Patriots lose, but if you look below the headline, it says Patriots AFC Champions. Confused?

Must have had "Pats win" and "Pats lose" text prepared in advance and the wrong one was punched up. At my newspaper, I often have to tease late sports events on page 1. I always type something like "Pats Jags SCORE HERE XXXxxxXXX" in the text box to make sure (a) nobody thinks the page is done and sends it to press before we have a result and (b) to make sure the right winner is in that text box when it does go to press.

I wonder what the anchors were saying, since the picture gives mixed messages. My view is just because the technician responsible for the crawl screws up doesn't also mean everyone had the story wrong. I see these kinds of mistakes at the news channels all the time. And the web sites will sometimes say one thing, while the channel is saying another. There are often a lot of people involved, and they don't all report to the same person.

I've seen similar screw-ups on other stations. Usually the anchors will just read the right information and ignore the wrong text on the screen, maybe raising their voices a little just to let the viewers know that what they're saying is the real deal while not throwing one of the technical staff under the bus. A few times, I've seen a wrong phone number or wrong address appear in a graphic and the anchor will notice it and say, "That phone number is wrong. The number to call is xxx-xxx-xxxx."
