I turned on the Russ Martin Show yesterday (which seems to have become the Dan O'Malley Show) and I got in on the tail end of Dan saying something like "I guess that's what happens when you switch formats..." I did not know what he was referring to. Is the Eagle flying away again? Did they drop their 20% Edge music? Did STAR 102.1 crash after the Christmas music stopped?
before you get you hopes up on another DFW radio station format change happening, i like to explain in details what's going on at the RMS and The Eagle all together.
what Dan said yesterday was about the format of the show itself while Russ has been out sick.
to give a back story, in the last couple of years, ever since he had his old Frisco home broken in in November 2015, Russ has had several health issues, ranging from bad allergies to a blood clot in his leg that came close to him having his toe or foot amputated to getting sick alot lately, and on top of that, he moved out of his old Frisco home for an new home in Frisco, he had said on air in recent months that he kept slipping on Dog P*** where he has to take tramadom to relieve himself from any pain from injuries caused by it. and Russ has missed work alot in those 2 years, causing Dan to pick up the pace as a replacement host while Russ is recovering from illness/injury.
the typical format of the Russ Martin Show is
hour 1: commercial break (sometimes starts at the end of Ayo's shift) a few songs, then RMS opening theme song which is William Orbit's Fire & Mercy, which then starts the opening segment (if Russ isn't running so late it forces the second segment to become the de facto opening segment), the first actual commercial break then first check of traffic with Alfie & weather with Dan, then second segment (or opening segment if Russ ran extra late), second commercial break.
hours 2 & 3: second/fourth check of traffic & Weather, third/fifth segment, then third/fifth commercial break, then third/fifth check of weather & traffic, then forth/sixth segment, then forth/sixth commercial break
hour 4 & overrun: sixth check of traffic & weather, seventh segment, seventh commercial break seventh check of traffic & weather, eight segment (short segment, this segment on Fridays or last show of week if it's a short week i.e. before Christmas break or a no work holiday falls on a Friday is normally reserve for pet adoptions for PAWS in the City, a charity that works with no kill animal shelter to find dogs and cats new forever homes where they have have pets that are ready to adopt say at a foster home), eighth commercial break, eighth and final check of traffic and weather, then the ninth & final segment that overruns into 7 PM hour which ends the show in which they play a instrumental remake of AC/DC's Shook Me All Night Long perform by a local DFW area AC/DC tribute band name Back In Black (named after the album & title track song of said album, the first album AC/DC made with Brain Johnson after Bon Scott's untimely death), then music playing resumes with evening host Klinger.
but lately, when Russ got sick with the flu (which he caught after his new car wouldn't start and he got a ride with Jerry Caldwell the show's current web director, who was dealing with the flu the day before Russ got sick) which resulted in Russ going home sick in the middle of his show forcing Dan and the rest of the "treehouse" carrying on the show without the "bossman" at one point in the last few week, he return to work with a fever and claimed he had a headache and got k.o'ed by a speaker falling on his head while he was sick only to skip work once more last week. he returned on air again today (actually yesterday now it's after midnight) from his flu illness. Russ said on his first show back today that he went to the ER over the weekend last weekend.
and when Dan and the rest of the show carried on without Russ, they made some changes to the show's format by alternating between a format of traffic & weather, song, segment, commercial or song, traffic and weather, segment, commercial break for every segment except the opening segment, and the last two segments of the show where
lately, the opening segment is commercial (starts at Ayo's 10-3 PM midday shift), a few songs, show's opening theme, show opening segment, and the final two segments are seventh commercial break, eight check of traffic & weather, then eight segment (short segment), then eighth commercial break, eighth and final check of traffic & weather, then ninth & final segment (overrun into the 7 PM hour), then the show's closing theme, then music resumes with Klinger starting his evening shift.
anyway, i think it might be time for Russ to retire if his health issues are too much to continue the Russ Martin Show in this way and he should just hand the show over to Dan and let him be the permanent host. plus when Dan's hosting, the show has a fresh and different vibe to it compare to the status quo of the RMS lately, and Dan's been doing a good job as being fill in host anyway.
