KABC-AM wins five Golden Mike Awards

https://news.****************/cgi-bin/rol.exe/headline_id=n35142

That is interesting though because we have went after KABC-AM before because of how mismanaged it is and how low rated the station is for Los Angeles.

Cumulus Media's Los Angeles News/Talk radio outlet 790 KABC swept the 68th Annual RTNA Golden Mike Awards on Saturday, January 27, capturing top honors in all five categories in which the station was nominated. The station has won nine Golden Mike Awards in the past two years alone, and sportscaster Randy Wang brought home his second consecutive win this year. 790 KABC received the five Golden Mike Awards in the following categories:
Best Newscast Under 15 Minutes: Leeann Tweeden-Anchor, Sharon Reardon-Editor
Best Sports Segment: Randy Wang
Best Government and Political Reporting: James Rojas
Best Traffic Reporter: Bill Thomas
Best News Reporting by Radio Network or Content Syndicator: Jim Roope
Cumulus Media/Los Angeles VP/Market Manager Dawn Girocco said, "We thank and congratulate 790 KABC's Drew Hayes, Nathan Baker, Doug Mcintyre, Leeann Tweeden, Randy Wang, Les Seigel, Tim Winebrenner, Bill Thomas, Sandy Wells, Sharon Reardon, James Rojas, and Jim Roope for their professionalism, dedication and hard work in delivering award-winning news reporting and coverage to our listeners and community. Five Golden Mikes made for an incredible evening for our team. It is an honor to work with these talented news professionals and we couldn't be prouder of this fantastic recognition of the outstanding work they do each and every day."

Is it mismanaged, or is it just that the signal problems and deterioration of AM listening is the problem? I haven't lived there in decades, so I'm not saying that's the case, I'm actually asking. Though I get that KFI continues to do well, probably by better programming decisions, though the 50K watt blast-furnace signal can't hurt either.

I recall that by the 1970s, KABC was dominant in the ratings, had killed off their closest talk-radio competitor (KLAC), and IIRC, was even beating the former ratings leader, KHJ. My mother was hooked on the station - I remember her listening to Pamela Mason (wife of actor James Mason), who had a morning show in the 60s, then, of course, Michael Jackson. I guess she liked British accents. There was some news-guy she loved too...I want to say George Arthur, but that may have been KNX - her other fave.

These awards are for news, sports, and traffic reporting, not ratings or how well it's managed. So maybe their reporters are better than KNX and KFI, or maybe these two stations didn't enter. Just because their news people win awards doesn't mean people will listen. I don't see any of their talk hosts on the list.
