Bama Sports to Summit

I don't think Crawford would do anything that'd get in the way of spreading their gospel, especially since football is basically a second religion here. ;)

Summit right now is the only major player in Birmingham that can afford to take on these sports teams. iHeart's future is shaky and Cumulus is in even worse condition from what I've read.

It's interesting reading the comments on that al.com article since the listeners probably have zero idea how screwed up Cumulus is and just how dire their straits are. They think it's just "bad management". Well, I guess it is, just not at JOX. It's the entire corporation that had been rotten to the core.

Not surprised with Cumulus bailing out of White Sox and Bull (in mid-season) contracts in Chicago.

So what you're saying is...starting this fall, from the top of a radio tower on top of Red Mountain in Birmingham, Alabama, Tide football will proudly be broadcast by WBPT FM 106.9...

...THE EAGLE!?!? :D

Any chance Summit uses the Tide sports acquisition to try sports again? Maybe pick up the pieces left by the departed "99.1 The Game" to run on say, 1320 & 100.1? Or not really worth the effort?

Roll Tide!

And that brings back memories of doing the games on WERC with Doug Layton calling 'em. Those games were so important to us, we had the Chief Engineer at the transmitter during each one with the auxiliary transmitter on hot standby just in case.

I forgot they called themselves the Eagle. The Mountain Brook Alumni won't like that. I sense a change of branding before football season. The classic rock format seems to be doing ok for them.

How valuable are the radio rights in 2018? Most Bama games are on TV. Because the rights are very expensive, this is a test of the sales department. Can they help their station turn a profit? Evidently the WJOX managers and sales team could not and decided to cut their losses. Cumulus would have negotiated to keep the rights if the revenue was there. Not even a bankrupt company cuts a profit center.
