Have independent stations carried network sports?

I've had it happen where WLOS/13 in Asheville carries a ACC game, but WMYA/40 carries a ABC Sports show(produced by ESPN). Has it happened before in your area?

Yes very recently when KOFY San Francisco the independent station in the market aired NBA Games from ABC because KGO TV the Disney O&O in the market had to air a Raiders game from ESPN.

For Fox O&O's like KICU-TV aka KTVU Plus they air some Fox Sports programming just in Case KTVU has to deal with overtime from one of the NFL games, MLB games from Fox Sports too.

In the early 90's WLMT 30 in Memphis carried Notre Dame football from NBC any time it conflicted with the syndicated SEC game on WMC NBC 5 until The SEC games were moved to 30 later.

This has gone ion for years in many markets. At one point in the early '90s, when San Francisco's KRON was the NBC affiliate, the station often pre-empted NBC sports events, which were picked up by the aforementioned KOFY TV 20. That station ran a few NBA games, and a couple of golf tournaments, when KRON's pogram director at the time was complaining that NBC's sports schedule was too 'inconsistent' and the station wanted mor 'long-term stability'. Eventually, they backed off on weekend sports pre-emptions, and ceded the Saturday-morning children's shows to KOFY.

For years, WFSB-TV (CBS) channel 3 of Hartford carried the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon. One year, the CBS Sports coverage of US Open Tennis ended up on WCTX-TV (MY) channel 59 of New Haven. More recently, regional FOX Sports coverage of Major League Baseball would have one game on WTIC-TV (FOX) channel 61 of Hartford (such as the Yankees), with a different game on sister station WCCT-TV (CW) channel 20 of Waterbury (the Red Sox or Mets).

My NBC affiliate, WYFF sometimes did that too, but for ACC basketball or football from Jefferson Pilot- but sometimes the NBC Sports stuff would be scheduled after the ACC game. One time though, the ACC game aired on WLOS, so that WYFF could air the Florida State-Notre Dame "Game of The Century" in it's entirety.

Same reason why WHNS/21 carried a ABC sports golf event on Labor day- it was because WLOS had the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon.

Back in its WJRJ days, Atlanta's channel 17 (now WPCH) carried AFL Sunday football games that then-NBC affiliate WSB/channel 2 passed up. They carried the odd Saturday college tilt from ABC as well. In 1980, WGNX/channel 46 (now CBS outlet WGCL) carried college basketball games passed up by WAGA/channel 5 (the original CBS affiliate here).

Correct on that. It was November of '81 when CBS started airing college basketball.

I wonder if WGNX ever carried a Hawks game from CBS in 80, given that later on, they did carry Hawks games.
