1560s 50kw day site returns to service

So, David Gow is happy with SportsMap on FM 94.1 at 99 watts, while his AM 1560 gets returned to 46,000 watts daytime, broadcasting Vietnamese. Apparently, he is confident that a pip-squeek signal for sports on FM is much more valuable than its former mega-signal on AM.

Of course he is 94.1 FM covers most of Houston and sounds way better than 1560 AM

"Houston" is an 11-county MSA, with over 7,000,000 persons. 94.1 barely covers a piece of Harris County, and about 900,000 in its 60 dbu signal and just 550,000 in the 65 dbu. It hardly "covers most of Houston" when, in fact, based on the 65 dbu, it covers less than 7% of the market.

There is no such thing as a mega-signal on those very high frequencies; KILT's 5 kw at 610 vastly out-covers 1560 just because it is on the "good" part of the dial.

Still sounds better than 1560 am

"barely covers a piece of Harris County"... ha! I was listening to it in Magnolia TX on Wednesday, near the intersection of FM 1488 and FM 1774... loud and clear, with stereo pilot.

95% of in home or at work listening takes place in the 65 dbu contour. Almost all the in-car listing is inside the 60 dbu. The ability of some people to find exceptions does not change the ratings, however.

I think some of the posters are insinuating that this translator may run a little "hotter" than its authorized power.

The return of the day site is actually a negative for the current format. The Vietnamese speaking population is concentrated in the southwest part of the market, but that is where KGOW’s notorious “Navasota null” is aimed, resulting in Reception complaints in the past. The night site pattern was aimed right at SW Houston and its Asian demographics.

The day site does put out a potent signal, but with a narrow beam. The station has been heard in the Great Lakes region around sunset.
