March 27 is here and no sign of the KZLA (B1) !!!! What's up ??? Anyone hear the upgraded KZLA yet ???
They have FCC approval to remain silent until June.... That's what I'd read.
They're on the air. Another "Old School" if one is to believe what they're running (maybe this is just a tease?).
Right now, it's another example of how terrestrial radio here is code blue.
Running enough bass to blast the entire neighborhood...
# 1 -- pushing the FCC rules a bit - as for sign on.
# 2 -- Very poor coverage in Tulare County - from Visalia south.
# 5 -- Cocola isn't "into" radio. Ole Vern is short on cash. And Olsund has
too many stations in the Fresno market. KZLA Is NOT for sale.
The owners took it "Off the market". At least that is what they have said.
Wow another R&B ONLY station, goes to prove that this is THE WORST RADIO MARKET IN THE COUNTRY, another station for THE HOOD, we need another one of these stations like I need a hole in my head, well at least it is in English, LMFAO. MEGA 97.9 is going to love this next to them, well back to my internet music.
What has been described to me by my Fresno contact is a rhythmic format with throwbacks. That is not "R&B" by any stretch of the imagination.
In the area of pop / contemporary music, rhythmic material has far more appeal than rock / alternative leaning stuff. With the demographics of Fresno, which are only 30% non-Hispanic white, you can't expect the variety of rock and non-rhythmic options that you might find in Milwaukee or Minneapolis.
With over half the market being Hispanic, and with over 60% of adult Hispanics having Spanish as a first language, it's pretty reasonable to expect that about a third of the viable stations to be in Spanish. Out of 39 commercial stations licensed to the market, 12 are in Spanish, including 1600, 1550 and 1510 which are barely viable in any language or format.
As to the economics of it all... the top 3 billing stations are Talk, Regional Mexican and Regional Mexican. The classic rock station is outbilled 2 to 1 by the leading Regional Mexican station, and 3 to 1 by the talker. It's not a market that supports rock of any kind very well.
# 1 -- pushing the FCC rules a bit - as for sign on.
# 2 -- Very poor coverage in Tulare County - from Visalia south.
# 3 -- KZLA playing an 1980's hit and then a 1980's + rap song in that order.
Who knows what the real playlist will be ? Wouldn't call it Old School.
Too much of a mix just yet.
# 4 -- Audio needs some work. No big deal.
# 5 -- Cocola isn't "into" radio. Ole Vern is short on cash. And Olsund has
too many stations in the Fresno market. KZLA Is NOT for sale.
The owners took it "Off the market". At least that is what they have said.
The guy you call good ole Vern is certainly not short on cash in any way I have known him for 35 years
Finally the truth comes out. Tell Vern Edwards White I said hi, and that I would love an update on the lawsuit.
Edit isn't working so. . . print this for ole' Vern.

Vern wanted people to think he was this guy:
https://bayarearadio.org/site/chris-edwards/
Just because that can't exactly be proven in court doesn't mean a single thing. His name is Vern White. He was never, ever "Chris Edwards on KYA in San Francisco."
I am glad I looked further, just as you suggested.

On topic now, the light on the KJWL/KZLA tower is out.
First off I know Mr Cocola is not short on cash in any way. The guy you call good ole Vern is certainly not short on cash in any way I have known him for 35 years he owns several businesses that are very successful, my guess is Mr Oslund.
Mr. Cocola is very busy with TV stations and his plate is full. And Vern is also a very busy and hard working business and radio person. Vern might not want the extra work. Vern is doing well with the two Hanford - Lemoore LPFM's. Both Cocola and White have more than enough cash - but do they have the time or the interest ?? I have a lot of respect for them both, and both have a lot of talent, but I can't see them wanting to buy KZLA.
Oslund needs KZLA like a hole in his head or pocket.
Someone should help Richard Smith and buy the Orange Cove 100.3 KMAK. Richard is hoping to retire soon I hear.
pointed out to you He Mr White won a lawsuit against Ben Fong Torrez and the newspaper look it up its public knowledge it was proven it was not him who Torrez claimed he talked to Phone records proved the number Mr Torrez call was not the correct Mr White.
Thanks for the Tower light update I listened to 98.3 today I personally don't like their music, just my opinion
If you won a lawsuit, I'd think that you's at least know how to spell "Torres".
