Jazz now on 95.3

Gunsmoke

Banned
WVCH is gone, now it sounds like progressive hot Jazz. No mention of calls, liners or on air voice, just non stop Jazz, many live cuts. Its not WRTI or WISX HD2. Is this permanent.

fantastic, just what the dial needs to compliment 540, 690, 860, 1310, 1340, 1540, 1590, 1680, 98.9 HD2, 99.9, 105.7, and who knows how many other rimshots. Between the Hispanic and dollar a hollar formats taking over, I better take a few Spanish and Religious classes. Still no Standards in the wasteland known as the Philly dial. The Wilmington signal using the JBR tower applied for a large power increase and is also carried on JBR HD3 which is receivable in the 95.3 overlap....

DAMNIT. I missed the jazz! I just heard WVCH in stereo yesterday, but must've tuned out before the jazz took over. Now hearing Ritmo 96.9 (or I guess it is, the only other language I speak is german, so out of luck here)

The Hispanic audience is growing and it skews younger than non-Hispanic white, so there's a ready and growing audience for Latino CHR. The audience for preach-'n'-teach-'n'-beg is older and smaller, but extremely gullible and willing to part with their money, which keeps those operations going. Standards has none of that going for it.

The only thing I do not quite understand and many professionals I ask in the business cannot give me a true answer. Why are so many stations every week flipping to Spanish from English. In the mid 1900's when many European ethnics were coming to America, a few stations were converted to their native tongue to help them out, but when their children learned the language, these stations reverted back to English. It does seem with the Hispanic peoples, more stations are popping up to fit their needs and are not flipping back to English, why is this, can someone add insight. Me being of Jewish, Italian and Cuban decent, was told by my ancestors there were Jewish, Italian, German, Polish, Cubano, Irish and other formats in the past not full-time though to help the new immigrants get on their feet, then stopped once they did. Heck my Italian professor Mr. DiChristoforo hosted an Italian program on WDAS-FM Sunday mornings in the 60's. My full Cuban side doesn't really identify with the Hispanic ethnic formats and does not listen to them, they listen to the English formats. I think at this rate, the Spanish formatted stations will outnumber the English ones by 2040 if the earth is still around, and all some old timers like me ask, is it that difficult to at least convert some failing AM an LP or Translator or even some HD side to Standards. And please don't call me Epstein from Welcome back Kotter, I was always teased but he was a so called Puerto Rican Jew but in reality he was of Italian decent LMAO.

They're reaching a young, growing audience with an increasing amount of money to spend. The European immigration boom is ancient history, while immigration from Spanish-speaking countries in the Americas and the Caribbean is still strong. (My grandparents, deceased, came from Ukraine and spoke Yiddish and broken English. My father, 96, speaks English fluently and still could converse in Yiddish if there were any other Yiddish speakers still alive for him to do so with. I, 62, speak only English.) So there continues to be a large Spanish-dominant population to be reached by Spanish-language radio. As for why entire stations didn't flip to Italian, Yiddish, Polish and the like back in the day, the answer to that is simple: There were far too few stations in most markets to do that, and the "off the boat" population wasn't really desirable to the advertisers of the day. Flipping to a Spanish-language format represents one of the few profitable options left in over-radioed markets.

CTListener is right when it comes to other languages besides Spanish. In 2016 two long time Polka Shows in Connecticut came to an end. Advertising support dried up. "Polka Power Radio" which was airing on 1KW WRYM 840AM for many years dated back to a show in the 1930s on WTIC-1080. The "Just Friends Polka Show" aired on 2.5KW WNTY-990 for over 20 years. It even survived the death of original host Patti-Ann Jakubiak in 2011. One of the hosts of "Polka Power Radio" was quoted as saying during the show's last year or so on the air he was paying WRYM for the airtime out of his own pocket. The other factor he mentioned is the younger generation either dosn't speak the language, like the music, or both. "Polka Power Radio" played Polkas in both English and Polish.

He's not lying about the younger generation. I have a friend who is Part Polish and he was 22 at the time these Polka Shows ended. He told me while it's a shame that the shows were canceled, he doesn't like the music and he doesn't speak or understand the language. He says Polka Music "makes his ears bleed." He has a collection of Polka records collecting dust that he inherited from his grandfather when he passed away. He doesn't want to disrespect his grandfather by throwing out the records. He told me I could have the records if I could get a Polka Show on the radio. I told him even if I had the money to pay a radio station for the air time, I'm not Polish, so I would feel like a fraud if I was hosting a Polka Show.

Correction, they are now using the fairly new 600' tower along side the WSTW/WDEL four tower array, not the original JBR stand alone. More power but must protect WFPG. Don't think that new tower was ever used, never anything on it, but the top looks like it could support a TV signal, not sure if its even owned by Delmarva.

95.3 Pennsauken is now relaying on WSTW-HD2 (they dropped the simulcast of WDEL) and branded as "Amor 95", romantic latin music.

I wonder if JBR is still going to simulcast them on their HD3, I am picking up nothing now just Disney on the 2,

JBR HD3 is still running the Spanish format. I recall when WSTW HD2 dropped Graffitti Radio they ran Amor in its place and put 1510 on the HD3, then put DEL back on the 2 a few months ago which had better coverage then 101.7. 95.3 has dabbled with Spanish formats three separate times, at one point they were advertising like it was the best thing on the planet, even WMGK utilied an HD3 to carry it but it lasted two months..good luck with this...

This time, it will last.

They had a rimshot called "The Wave" on HD-2 to try steal some audience from JBR, guess it didn't work. Don't know why they took down WDEL and not WFAI instead from their HD feed, I'm gonna miss WDEL on HD.
