NPR's Carl Kasell has passed away at 84

Carl Kasell was a true gem. Katie Couric apprenticed under him (when she was still known as Katherine). If only his voice were on my home answering machine! Requiescat in pace.

Now who will do the voicemail prizes on Wait Wait?! Guessing Bill Kurtis himself.
RIP Carl, what a legend. What the heck's going on - so many good people are dying all of a sudden! I'm so sorry for Peter Sagal, Bill Kurtis, Paula Poundstone, Tom Bodett, and the rest of the Wait Wait panelists and crew. :-(

Carl had not been the prize on "Wait Wait!" for a couple of years now. I don't believe they ever explained his retirement from reading people's voicemail, but I guess we now know.

Really? I thought I heard Peter Sagal say 'you'll win our prize - scorekeeper Carl Kasell's voice on your answering machine' just weeks ago...

Actually they changed up their prize on Wait Wait DOn't Tell Me late last year, I believe it was the Minnesota taping of last year, that Peter Sagal had announced the changing of the prize, of a contest can now pick anybody they want within the show. I am sure listeners can not call up and request Tom Hanks's voice on their announcing machine, or any of the other NPR people. A there have been newer listeners to the show, and they would hear his name, and they wouldn't have any idea who he was in less they looked at previous shows.

If anybody hasn't yet, take a listen to last week's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me episode as expect they had a tribute to the late Carl Kassell.
