Radio station websites

For all the grief Entercom stations give the Buffalo News for not being timely, the BN remains the go-to website for breaking news and info.

The Buffalo Sabres finally nab the right to pick FIRST in the upcoming NHL draft and after watching the lottery presentation during the Sharks/Knights game, I went straight to WGR's website for the story. Nothing. I then went to WBEN. Nothing! I then went to the Buffalo News...and of course they had the headline.

That's all you need to know about how legit their claim is about being more timely than the News.

And right before I entered this post, neither WGR or WBEN has it up yet. lol Nice going!

And yet WGR consistently beat TBN when it came to NFL draft updates. So what?

I'll bet WGR had it on the air before the Buffalo News hit the streets. The guys on the radio were talking about it on the air. Updating the website comes later.

If you want immediacy, turn on the radio, or at least connect to their stream. It's been a few years since the Buffalo News ran an "extra" and sent the newsboys out to the street corners.

lol. If you want real immediacy, go to Twitter and/or Facebook. Truth. :)

You get immediacy from Twitter and Facebook, but not necessarily Truth. There's more utter nonsense there than on the radio - although there's plenty of utter nonsense there as well.

This draft, numerous websites were ahead of the curve, updating extraordinarily fast, and in many cases beat WGR. The station had a good draft night, but ESPN and other sports sites that were on their "A" game. And yes, Twitter accounts of Adam Shefter and a few others were on the money.

I just don't think of a radio station website when looking for information. Probably because I haven't found whatever it was I was searching for.

The ineptitude of the Bills & Sabres ownership should provide WGR plenty of website content. The NFL is "investigating" the Russ Brandon exit. Did he steal from the Bill Cosby playbook?

Most stations websites are bare bones and lack any real content. They simply tell visitors to go to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc... That's like a restaurant telling patrons to go eat somewhere else. WBFO and the Buffalo News do a solid job of updating their websites frequently...

Not exactly. Facebook & Twitter are platforms with content created by the local radio stations, so your comparison isn't valid. Local radio stations have ways to monetize their content on Facebook & Twitter. They are social media platforms that are designed to be extensions of personalities on the air.

I think the degree to which one gets "truth" via Facebook and Twitter is dependent on how one uses it - their 'friends', 'likes', 'groups', and feed settings... things like that. If one wants "truth' from those platforms, one can certainly get it. In that sense, I don't see it as much different than any media (radio included). However, I stand by my earlier comment, if one wants 'immediacy', Facebook/Twitter will beat radio hands down.

For example, if one wants 'truth' and immediacy about the US Air Force Thunderbirds... you'll get it from their Facebook/Twitter much faster than radio. And you certainly won't get it from a radio station website.
