Probably not strong enough to get to the north fringes of the San Diego market. When our family lived out there in Escondido, we turned our antenna toward Los Angeles to see what would come in. It was a crap shoot. 2, 4, 5 and 7 came in but barely.

I suppose if you were closer to the coast you would have picked up most if not all the LA signals. I know full power FM stations from LA are quite strong near the water from Oceanside down to Del Mar.

When cable first came into use, I believe Northern San Diego County got all the major LA TV stations, while San Diego and its closer neighbors got independent channels 5 and 11, maybe 9 and 13. In fact, KTLA 5 was still on San Diego cable as recently as a few years ago, the last LA signal available. Maybe it's still there. Of course, San Diego now has so many of its own TV signals, as well as from Tijuana, that cable providers don't feel the need to include more than KTLA in the cable line up. KTLA does a surprising amount of local news, so that's why it may still be included since it's not duplicating much programming already available on San Diego stations.

By the way, KTTV 11 was one of the first TV stations to go almost 24/7. At 2:50 am, the listings show 11 with "All Night Show," while KNXT 2 is doing "Give Us This Day" just before its sign-off. The San Diego Union-Tribune probably doesn't want to list all the old movies 11 will be running, so it sums it up as "All Night Show."

I believe that KTTV Los Angeles and WCBS-TV 2 NYC were the only two stations broadcasting around the clock in 1963. A few stations in other cities would broadcast all night on Saturday night, a few on Friday and Saturday. And eventually KNXT 2 would match KTTV with all night programming, becoming the third station in America, maybe in the world, running nearly 24/7.

I say "nearly 24/7" because stations still had to do some transmitter maintenance in those days, every 24 hours. Both stations signed off each day for about 60 minutes, but staggered it. KNXT did it around 5:30 am so it could start the day around 6:30. KTTV did it around 6:30 am so it could sign on at 7:30. And when I say "sign off" I mean ran no real programming. They both often had a test pattern on, all that time, unless they had to totally shut down the transmitter.

1963 was actually before KCET 28 went on the air on September 28, 1964 in Los Angeles and KEBS 15(before named KPBS on October 1, 1970) first went on the air on June 25, 1967 in San Diego!!

6 - Wide World Of Sports: Men's singles final of the Wimbledon All-English championship (taped; not sure if from another source since XETV had ABC shows bicycled to them)

6 - It Was Your War (XETV would run ABC's shows here on half-hour delays, perhaps the result of bicycling)

Actually, as I pointed out in my post about ABC moving from channel 6 to channel 39 in 1973, ABC had a live microwave interconnect to XETV by 1963. I don't know why there would still have been any bicycling, nor can I explain the odd way channel 6 was programmed back then.

Ah, noted. Even though it's my childhood neck of the woods, I am still a mite uneducated about their broadcast legacy.
