CBS brass had said they were not happy with the ratings declines on Monday. The night became a clean slate after the network cancelled every show that aired on the night besides The Big Bang Theory, which started there in the fall, and Man with a Plan.

After expanding its Monday comedy block back to two-hours the last two seasons, the network is reverting to an hour of comedy followed by action drama – new comedies The Neighborhood and Happy Together (formerly untitled Damon Wayans Jr.) and the Magnum P.I. reboot. The previous CBS Monday 9 PM action drama, Scorpion, which later moved to 10 PM and was canceled last week, will be succeeded at 10 PM by Bull, which is relocating from Tuesday.

Bull is vacating the post-NCIS Tuesday 9 PM slot that had become CBS’ most successful launch pad for e new drama series. It will now be used for the new Dick Wolf series F.B.I.

CBS’ Murphy Brown revival will be joining the Thursday lineup, replacing Life In Pieces and following what Kahl called “Prime Chuck block” – The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon and Mom. It will face new NBC Thursday 9:30 PM comedy I Feel Bad, prompting Kahl to call the 9:30 “I feel Bad for NBC” slot.

The only other change on the CBS fall schedule is new drama God Friended Me, which takes over the 8 PM held by the now-defunct Wisdom of the Crowd last fall. It’s about an atheist who gets friended by God on Facebook, described by CBS executives as echoing Touched by an Angel in a contemporary setting.

Held for midseason are returning series Man with a Plan, Life, Elementary, Instinct, Elementary, as well as new drama series The Code and The Red Line and comedy Fam.

I’m not so sure this strategy is going to work for CBS. The only potential winners emerging from the newcomers might be the Murphy Brown revival and FBI.

Why can't the revivals of Murphy Brown and Magnum, PI swap nights on the schedule? Murphy Brown to Monday night, and Magnum to Thursday--just like it was during most of the two shows' original runs? The reverse does not seem right.

Because that’s meaningless to an average viewer.

Correct. I was around in those days - and watched Magnum PI occasionally, and Murphy Brown religiously, but have absolutely no memory of the nights either of those shows were on. There are a few I can remember over the years - Lassie, Bonanza, and Ed Sullivan from my childhood (all Sunday prime time) and most of the 80s thru 00s NBC Thursday night shows, but I think that's because they kept marketing Must See TV for Thursday, so it's stuck in my brain pan even now.

It would push the rest of their prime time schedule past 11PM, and Fox's prime time ends at 10.

they don't need 4 hour long programs on doubleheader days, just 3, and I'm sure the local stations don't like their news pushed late, it would probably improve the demos for 60 minutes

I just don't get why CBS doesn't put an NFL post game show have 60 Minutes at 8:00PM and 2 dramas after to get 11PM local news on at time during NFL double headers. I just don't get CBS thinking on that but I don't really watch CBS all that much other than Undercover Boss or NFL games/college basketball along with March Madness and sometime golf.

What they've been doing works for them. A different approach works for Fox.

Plus I think at least some of the "60 Minutes" audience will demand that their show starts within minutes (or even seconds) of the doubleheader's conclusion--no matter if the last game ends at 7:43 ET (as an example). Some may not be happy to wait until 8/7.

Where's Life in Pieces?
