NBC O&O's to include a 4am Local Newscast July 31st

Something that I first reported about it on my blog.

I can see NBC Bay Area starting a 4am newscast at some point though. Mainly because in San Francisco Fox O&O KTVU already has a 4am Newscast called Mornings on Fox 2 from 4-10am. Also Nexstar already has a 4am newscast that airs on KRON4 and NBC is just responding mainly to go after their competitors.

if this experiment works in those markets, then it will be a matter of time before KXAS (Dallas-Fort Worth area NBC O&O station) here in the DFW area expands "NBC 5 Today" to start at 4 AM, thus making it the first in the DFW TV market to start at 4 AM as for now, all of them start at 4:30 AM.

A report out says NBC Boston is struggling to make its mark in the market.

The Boston Globe says since the station joined the other five stations, including the former NBC affiliate of 20 years, WHDH Channel 7, NBC Boston finishes last in the ratings.

According to the July ratings WCVB Channel 5 is the clear frontrunner, winning more newscasts than any other station in Boston, while NBC Boston lags far behind, finishing last — well behind NBC’s former affiliate, WHDH-TV — in the ratings for every newscast except 11 p.m., when it finished fourth in total households.”

Here's one reason why NBC thinks WBTS needs a 4am newscast and its yes to boost ratings for the station and go after their competitors.

Not surprise 4AM will be all the range with the midsize markets in the next few years. Every big local station starts at 4:30AM Fox17 being the last in late May WWMT was the first to do it in 2012 Wood TV was second a week later then WZZM in 2014 started a 4:30AM.

San Francisco has had a 4am newscast for a few years though like Fox O&O doing Mornings on KTVU Fox 2 starting at 4am since 2015. And Nexstar/(formerly Media General) doing KRON4 morning news for some time before 2015. But in San Francisco KRON and KTVU did local news at 4am mainly to have an edge over the other Network owned stations in the Bay Area that were airing the overnight news from their networks like Early Today on NBC and America This Morning on ABC, and a simulcast of CBSN on the CBS O&O's.

FOX 29 in Philly has been starting their local news at 4am for quite some time here. Interesting though that the lead-in for the 4am news cast is actually a rebroadcast starting at 3am of the previous night's 10 o'clock news...

and almost a year later, i was wrong about which station would be the first to have the morning news start at 4 AM, turns out that KDFW Fox 4 was the first station to do morning news at 4 AM, not KXAS NBC 5.

And KXAS has yet to expand there.

In fact, them, WTVJ, WVIT, KNSD and KNTV are the only NBC O&O's left yet to expand to 4:00 a.m. I think KNTV and KXAS will be the next followed by WTVJ.
