KTFM Completes Move-in

Looks like KTFM has completed it's move-in from south of 1604 to KLRN's tower northeast of Calaveras. Power is lower but it is closer to the population center and the antenna is much higher.

Anyone noticed changes in reception?

Yes, significant improvement to the North and East. I can get it on scan on 35 N in New Braunfels. HD coverage is much better too. And it’s synced and leveled well with the analog. It used to be very rough listening north of The Forum, and the HD was almost unlistenable outside of 410 on the North Side.

I'm not sure why stations have backup antennas on the same towers as their original antennas. If the power goes out so will the backup transmitter if they're at the same location, right?

Essentially all significant radio stations have back-up generators so the issue is not power.

Stations often have not only auxiliary transmitters but auxiliary antennas. That is so the station can remain on the air in the event of transmitter failure or maintenance as well as antenna work or damage.

That makes sense. Funny enough though now KTFM was dead air. I guess the studio's having a lil problem and the backup transmitters won't help in this case.

As for the name of the station I will still know it as KTFM and Energy's just some new name for tourists who don't know about KTFM and what those call letters mean for San Antonio people. I know that KTFM was hugely popular on 102.7 back in the days. Same with Mix 96.1, I will continue calling it Mix 96.1 no matter what catchy name their marketers come up with LOL.

This might help 94.1 receive better numbers but the format needs to be freshen up a bit. Too repeats and slow on new music.

I have a feeling KTFM doesn't have too many local people managing the station.
When I posted that about it being dead air, KTFM as well as 95.7 and 104.1 (Spanish) were dead air too. The Spanish stations both came back with regular programming at least 5 or maybe 10 minutes before KTFM. Since this is San Antonio, so close to the border of Mexico, that doesn't surprise me all that much, LOL but KTFM needs more new music and attention, I agree.

Actually, San Antonio has a fairly low percentage of Spanish dominant persons. Only about 20% of Hispanics (the market is 51% Hispanic) are Spanish dominant, meaning that the market is only around 9% total Spanish Dominant. As a contrast, LA, which is 40% Hispanic, has more than half of all Hispanics being Spanish Dominant and that means about 22% of the market!
