I tried to search online for this "$25,000 Family Challenge", to no avail...making an educated guess, it was likely one of those locally-produced shows that WSB likes to air in place of network programming on occasion.

I did the same. I hope someone would elaborate

Seeing the late night schedule on WTBS 17 (which we got nationally on Superstation TBS), I loved Night Tracks which aired on Friday nights all night long. I don't think our cable had MTV then, so I would always watch Night Tracks each week for music videos and sometimes recorded them on the VCR.

I'd also guess it was a special related to the $25,000 pyramid. The only other reference to a game show by this name was for one in the mid 90s that didn't have the money figure associated with it.

It was locally produced and aired and had no connection with The $25,000 Pyramid. It bumped ABC's Mr. Belvedere and Just The Ten Of Us, which Chattanooga's channel 9 aired. It was nominated for a Southeast division Emmy for Outstanding Achievement, Entertainment Series. (It lost to WXIA's Nugzar: Georgia to Georgia.)

Although the channel was not listed in the Rome News-Tribune, Atlanta's WVEU/channel 69 (now WUPA) carried the third half hour of ABC's Home show and CBS's Now You See It on a delay to 4 PM and 4:30 PM respectively.

Was it a game show?

More of a stunt show. As I recall, it was done on the campus of a local high school.
