AM Daytime Bandscan From Montville Connecticut

The radio I used was the Tecsun PL-390 and I used no loops or external antennas, just the internal ferrite. Some signals were more directional than others. The mileage shown has a 5 mile margin of error. Scan occurred around 530-600 time period on June 14th. This is how I grade reception:
1. Very Weak/Barely Making it
2. Weak but Audible
3. So so some hiss/interference or a little static
4. Fairly Strong/Almost local quality
5. Local or in like a Local

Thanks for the scan Carl. I'm surprised that WABC is only a "1" when some other NJ transmitters are putting out a better signal in your direction.

I'm amazed that there are only two "5" signals and that one of them is 93 miles away, despite the presence of four other signals (beside the other "5," WXLM) within 20 miles of Montville.

A lot of our local stations are directional. WICH is highly directional to the Southeast and I am West so it isn't as solid and the others aren't strong. WXLM is also highly directional as well. WCBS was almost a "5" but there was a little hiss underneath it and WTIC as well.

Good stuff, Carl. Got a question : Were you and the Tecsun indoors on wall current or outdoors with batteries?

( Retro: the family tribe used to vacation at Messina's Cabins in Old Saybrook. It was like two dozen NYC locusts (accents and all) descending on the place for a week. The late and great Paul Sidney, mostly of WLNG fame, used to work at WLIS)

That's awesome! and I should have included that but it was outdoors with batteries.

Interesting bandscan! Thanks for sharing.

I used Google maps to see where Montville, Connecticut is and now I can see why WFAN was a 5, WCBS was a 4, but WABC was only a 1.

The path from WABC's tower in Lodi, New Jersey is virtually all over land while the path from WFAN and WCBS from High Island in the Bronx is most all over salt water.

Yeah exactly! I believe 710 and 1010 are the same way as WABC BUT I receive those fairly well. Sometimes, transmitters are weird. I have a history of getting the blowtorches from NYC and surrounding areas quite well and WBZ went from 1-2 to now a 3 since they went back on the air. At night all the NYC blowtorches kill the AM dial with my tecsun reading 60's and 70's for signal strength.

Good stuff, Carl. Add me to the list of those surprised by the differential between WABC and the other NYC big sticks. My limited experience with the New York day signals was about 20 years ago driving west on I-80. On that drive, WABC definitely held its own with the other big signals. IIRC, it was good for about an hour into Pennsylvania.

And, FWIW, WABC and WCBS are the best NY skywaves at my location northwest of Chicago.

Yeah, I've heard stories about NYC stations coming in everywhere. Pretty much everywhere I go, NYC comes in. Like someone else said, WABC has a different signal pattern while WCBS and WFAN are directed toward me over salt water.

At my location in the near north Chicago area WCBS has always had the best sky wave signal of any NYC station. WABC is second when WBBM isn’t using HD. When they are I can forget about hearing WABC at my location.

Very cool! On my end I receive WBBM fairly well, WMVP with lots of static (Sounds like a 60s radio) and WGN 720 on sky wave.

Hi Carltheradioguy, semi-related to your post, how were you able to determine that the WVNE transmitter was located in North Brookfield? Thanks!

WXLM 980 is high directional? I dont think so.. its licensed for 1000 watts day, 72 watts night, non directional
