Pyongyang on 2850 khz this morning...

Got bored and went dialing around with my Yaesu '1200 at around 4:45 pacific this morning. Stumbled across some sort of good sounding piano concerto or something. Signal was pretty great, Listened to the top of the hour, heard the chimes, and then news or something, which sounded muffled and awful. Antenna is a 130 foot center fed dipole, with 600 ohm ladder line, which was still tuned on 3740 khz for my usual weekend sked with buddies..

@ Dave .... way to go!

Back in the early 90's, I started to calibrate the AM dial of the Lafayette HA 600 to * my * specs. The Lafayette dial was off. I wanted it 'on', lol.

The AM dial was easy enough. I was domiciled for a while in a basement apartment in Philly, and using a longwire taped through all the walls on the ceiling.

The shortWAVE dial that seemed to offer the most fun (and aggravation) was 31 metres. But I finally got my 'new' dial finished to accuracy.

Terrific listening back then, on 31 m. And WWV 10000 was a sturdy reference. Thankx for the memories!

I'll rue the day when the Koreas combine, which may be within the next 20 years or so.

One of the reasons for a lot of the signals on the low bands is the radio war between N. and S. Korea.

I don't think DXing is a good reason not to lessen the conflict in Northeast Asia.

As recently as 1992 or so, 31 meters was just about as listenable as the AM dial in Philly was.

It was great hearing Radio Australia on 9580 nearing actual sunrise .... DeutscheWelle (sp?) on 9690 .... Pop music from KUSW on 9815 .... the fabulous morning news tandem battle from Radio Rumbos 9660 .... the neat TOH sounder/timer from Prague on 9630 (plus Spain and the Netherlands at different times there) .... actual music on CFRX and CFCX ....

That was back when the actual *AM* dial still held a lot of entertainment value. But for the better part of a year there in NE Philly there was some good listening to devour on 31 meters.

49 meters was pretty cool, too.
