Buffalo has a new Oldies station

An overnight transformation. WECK/1230AM/102.9 & 100.5FM is not just an Oldies station, but Buffalo's Number One Oldies Station! The "Good Times and Great Oldies" are back!

The music's different, but the air staff and the jingles remain the same.

Will this format get Buddy any closer to the 4.0 share he predicted a year ago? What do you think?

I’ve never seen a radio station make more course corrections over a one year period than Buddy at WECK. Since its official launch last July 10th, there have been so many changes, my head is spinning. First, WECK was a “full service” radio station, with CBS News on the top of every hour. Then, CBS casts were dropped in favor of locally anchored live reports in the AM and recorded newscasts in the PM. Then, the PM casts were dropped (which was a good thing because don’t pretend you’re covering the day’s news when you’re running old news from the morning). The music was being constantly tweaked. Songs were added. Others were deleted. The talk during morning drive and Danny’s show was reduced in favor of more music. Still, Buddy was building the Timeless Favorites brand. I was hearing from family and friends who were enjoying the mix. Then, a couple of weeks before the one year anniversary, yet another change — this time to the Oldies brand. I gotta admit I like what I’m hearing today. But I’m sure there are listeners who are lamenting the loss of some of the standards that populated the Timeless format. It sounds like Buddy is making it up as he goes along. Buffalo’s number one Oldies station? What’s number 2? WJJL? Buddy, how about sticking with something and stop the tweaking. Give it a chance to work!

Questions, questions, we have questions....

1. So is it no longer "Buffalo's Very Own"? If not, whose is it now?
2. Did Moon sunset?
3. Does this mean we reset the clock on Buddy getting a 4 share?

Seriously - this is a dumb move. Successful Oldies stations do it by not living in the past, just playing music from then but maintaining a contemporary presentation. WECK's airstaff is the poster child for not living in the present and was its blue chip. But it's Buddy's station, maybe the wolves are at the door and are telling him what to do. We'll never know.

BTST there's been a lot of chatter about WRME, also known as Me-TV FM, an oldies station in Chicago.

But it's all oldies, no DJs. And I don't think they stream.

Thought i would chime in here. This is NOT a format change. We are filling a void in the same demo. We are Buffalo's Very Own. The Moon is not setting, and this DOES re-set my thought on a 4.0 share 12 plus. I now think a 5.0 share. I think you'll be pretty impressed by the Spring book, but what do i know :) Buffalo is an old city. Buffalo deserves a station that caters to boomers and older seniors. WECK is that station. Call us Timeless Favorites or Great Oldies. Means the same thing.

Let me address the format corrections in the past year. There have been a few. I admit that these were my call, however they are changes for the better. These are all changes that will position WECK better for the future. I am learning, but as the ratings and advertiser results will point out, the learning is in the right direction.

I know the numbers. I know the progress. I know the target demos. I know the financials. I know the staff. I know the plan. Just enjoy that WECK is real radio run by real local people. I may want to remind you that WECK is beating MIX, WBUF, and WLKK 12 plus. These are all huge FM signals with big company backing. not bad for my 1KW AM and 2 FM translators...lets just move on and judge the results.

<snip>

WECK's airstaff is the poster child for not living in the present...

Hahahahahaaaaaaa!!!! Can't get more true than that statement. lol

No business can flourish with multiple chronologically proximate changes of the type being seen here. Nobody writes a business plan like this. Doesn't happen. I hope WECK is the exception that proves the rule. Also hope that there's someone with deep pockets that loves it/him. Fingers crossed.

The ratings show that WECK did NOT beat WBUF or MIX in the Fall 2017 & Winter 2018 books (12+). Buddy has a problem with reality.

WHTT used to be Oldies 104 until the Oldies moniker became toxic to ad agencies. Ratings are irrelevant to a station like WECK. The demos will be old no matter what "tweaking" is done. As Buddy said, "it doesn't matter if it's called Timeless or Oldies". Bottom line is the same. Either find clients who want to target 55+ demos exclusively or die trying. Oldies Rock & Pop might be a bit more viable than the Lawrence Welk stuff. Maybe his current clients are making "programming suggestions"...

You dudes are so freaking dumb. Somebody with deep pockets must love me?? Seriously? WECK profits more in a week than you probably make in a year. WECK did not beat WBUF OR MIX? go to phase 2 of the spring book. Toxic to agencies?.. your on dope. Stop by the station sometime and I can school you about how to make money in radio.

That's not "passion", that's "emotion".

Spin is spin. But if the (still new) business was already succeeding at its business plan - y'know, "super-serving the 55+ demo" - what savvy entrepreneur would change course so early? I admit that I don't know... do listeners get "confused" or "disgruntled" when stuff like this happens?

Where else are the 65+ listeners who like WECK going to go? I suspect that oldies - including some '50s and a lot of '60s pop will fly just fine with that audience. If Buddy can sell that audience, the music tweaks won't hurt him a bit. I doubt if WECK is anybody's Button #1 on their car radio, but when the rest of the world is in commercial set, Buddy has as opportunity to get people. Fewer tune-out songs will let him keep them longer.

Danny and the Juniors "Let's Go to the Hop," accompanied by a DJ singing in the background... set three buttons!

Were I still living in W.N.Y., I would have all my presets set to WECK.
It seems like a great playlist to me..... and similar to the fabulous music
heard on KAHM in Prescott, AZ.

But, to my knowledge, WECK doesn't have a lot of listeners in Prescott, AZ, does it?

Prescott median age = ~55
Buffalo median age = ~33

So, yeah, maybe its a good comparison. lol

That is "CITY" of Buffalo data. The median age of the MSA is:

"In 2016, the median age of all people in Buffalo-Cheektowaga-Niagara Falls, NY Metro Area was 40.7."

https://datausa.io/profile/geo/buffalo-niagara-falls-ny-metro-area/

The median age for Yavapai County is 51... that includes Pres-kitt and Pres-kitt Valley, Dewey-Humbolt and a few other towns and the rural population.

But "Que Sera Sera" by Doris Day? I heard it yesterday not long after the Eagles' "Take It To The Limit".

I am from the earliest boomer year, and that song is repulsively old to me... it's my parent's music. It's a 75+ song.
