WNBN 1290 Meridian Ms now DWNBN

Looks like WNBN has been deleted. I knew Frank Rackley had passed away several years ago, but the heirs of the station waited a bit too long to file for ownership change, among other things. WNBN had a colorful history with the FCC - like building the AM tower a few miles from where it was supposed to be. I don't know if that was ever corrrected, but they kept on broadcasting. Oh well... nothing to worry about now.

I was driving through Meridian on Friday... 1290 was definitely still on the air. I wonder if anyone got the message that they were deleted.

I heard it on the air just a few days after the FCC deleted the license. It is possible they filed an STA and it hasn’t hit the CDBS yet. Then again, they may not know... or care.

I have moved back to Meridian. Holy sox. Anyway, I can verify that WNBN is still on the air and operating as if nothing has changed. Their format is a raunchy blues type of thing. Kiss 104.1 was blues years ago but nothing like this (and they did very well). I can't imagine that they have many listeners besides a few die-hards.

The FCC will soon know about this. Not that stopping a pirate AM will be a high priority for them but they are still going to be reported. I couldn't care less about their music, it's that they are operating without a license and flaunting it. As a former radio pro, I can't stand that.

The FCC is aware of it already. If you dig a little deeper in the FCC database, you will find that they finally engaged the services of a broadcast attorney who has filed additional correspondence with the Commission, including a request to file a STA. If I understand things correctly, DWNBN can continue to operate until the FCC acts on the most recent information. I have seen the FCC reinstate deleted licenses in the past, so it may not be completely over for DWNBN yet.

If that's the case, it's a wonder they could afford an attorney (or maybe someone is doing it probono). Best wishes to them then.

Yes, there is currently a filing for reinstatement as of 7/24/18.

Do you have a link? I have searched and couldn't find anything. I'm just curious about their reasoning.

Yep. It's a shame this is mostly a case of "not knowing." I hope they are able to prevail. It would be a shame to lose yet another heretage set of calls.
