Good Karma Brands to get WTMJ Radio from Scripps

Interesting in this very slow sales process, and in both of the sales (Tulsa and Milwaukee) it was a company based in the market that bought the signals.

Will this open the door to the first full market coverage FM sports station? hmmmmmm.....

You ask an interesting question. They bought the Brewers contract with WTMJ. It will probably have to stay there until renewal.

Entercom has the Packers on WSSP, which has an FM translator.

So is it worth blowing up a country music format (low cost/high profit) to go head-to-head with an Entercom translator?

Karmazan is all about "branding." So who knows?

Yup. KTI is second to WMIL, and I ♥ Bankruptcy aint going away. Sports marketing is what Karmazin does best, and KTI's coverage smokes WSSP's translator.

I've been wondering about KTI's potential fate under Good Karma, too.

I grew up mostly in Tulsa about a mile from the current KVOO offices and studios and did my first internship at KRMG and KWEN about a quarter century ago. I have a few friends still in the market, and the ones at Scripps were quite relieved to find out they were going to Griffin.

I doubt the people at KTI are feeling the same way.

KTI has been on WMIL's heels since flipping to country, Scripps kept on making changes and cutting cost. If Good Karma stabilizes the station I could see KTI surpassing WMIL. WTMJ in the evenings and weekends is basically sports talk or PBP with 3 other sports stations in the market, sports seems to be saturated in Milwaukee.

I'm surprised at how low the pair went. I'm guessing billing is down significantly since the Journal days. WTMJ was regularly the number 1 billing station in Milwaukee 5-10 years ago for decades.

The Packers are on WTMJ along with the Brewers and Bucks.

Radio ad revenue is down in general across the fruited plain. Scripps is basically a two station cluster in Milwaukee, battling larger clusters for shrinking dollars. Sports may be saturated on AM, but not FM. And Milwaukee is a BIG sports market.

Here is an update

Wisconsin-based Morgan Murphy Media is part of a local investment group that will acquire 10kW News WTMJ-AM (620) and 14kW Country WKTI-FM (94.4) in Milwaukee. The company announced it would join Good Karma Brands in the venture. Good Karma Brands founder and CEO Craig Karmazin said in July the company would purchase and operate the radio stations from E.W. Scripps Co.
"Craig and his team at Good Karma Brands truly understand what it means to serve a local community," said Morgan Murphy Media Executive VP/COO Brian Burns. "We are excited to be in business with a group of people we've known for years who have an outstanding track record of success."
Milwaukee native and local broadcasting veteran Steve Wexler will run the group as VP/Market Manager. He'll oversee WTMJ and WKTI, in addition to 540 ESPN, ESPN Digital, the Wisconsin Sports Awards and the Tundr a Trio. He's expected to assume his new role when the purchase is complete.

WKTI To Flip To Sports

Country Aircheck just announced that WKTI will from country to sports on November 1st:

WKTI To Flip, Staff To Depart: Good Karma Brands is flipping Country WKTI/Milwaukee to Sports Nov. 1. The move aligns the company's sports and broadcast interests, but will lead to the Oct. 31 departure of staffers including PD Ryan Wild, MD/afternooner Karen Dalessandro and morning personality Carol Vonn.
