Bauerle going to WECK?

Do you remember the days of radio stunting ?. It was exciting. It’s show biz. Chill out BTW, Dick is a radio legend. The hype is going to get stronger. That’s what broadcasters should be doing. Hyping themselves.

Nonsense. That was not hype or stunting. It was a total misrepresentation of what was actually happening. A misrepresentation, by the way, that has ZERO resolution for any audience member who reads that headline because there will be NO moment where it becomes clear what really happened---unless at some point you run a promo announcing your new sales hire, which would be ridiculous.

On top of that, Dick Bauerle, while a very nice guy, is NOT a radio legend by any stretch. No offense to Dick.

Major disconnect on that move.

It was a total misrepresentation of what was actually happening.

No...it was a PARTIAL misrepresentation. Which is why it works. Do we all have to be literal? I don't think so.

It got attention. That's what it was supposed to do. Mission accomplished.

Look, MANY people have left Entercom Buffalo because the mood there is toxic! Buddy elected to leave because it sucked to be there. He is taking people with him and having a field day because those he recruited felt the same way. He is enjoying the rejuvenation of the radio spirit in Buffalo. After so many years of oppression at Entercom, it's a breath of fresh air where he is... let him enjoy the spirit of his new venture!

Ostrander was all apologetic on a recent Facebook post, writing "I thought using the Bauerle name was a funny tounge [sic] in cheek prank, but in retrospect, it was stupid on my part..." More ill-conceived than stupid. Most people who listen to the radio know who Tom is, few know his brother Dick. When they hear Bauerle, they think not of Dick, but the guy who's been pounding the tired neo-con drumbeat on the air for decades. Give the guy credit for apologizing. It's wholesome. Moreover, it gets him more publicity and Facebook sympathy. Some of the responses to his post were revealing. The part-time TV-Radio critic of The News wrote, "Next you will needlessly apologize to Don Shula." Another, from the scion of a former radio station owner and non-dairy products company advised "...remember what I told you when you bought the station, never apologize." Rich folks often taken that approach. Recalls a certain serial tweeter.

While I give heaps of credit to a stand-up apology, I think it shows that sometimes people think they are wiser than they really are. I do not care how many years one has been 'in-da-biz', this was immature. The act was clearly intended to be ambiguous and lead/enable people to believe something that was not true. So-called hype/stunting can go wrong... either publicly or personally (sometimes both). I don't see where this ill-conceived act of WECK was a net gain. Hype and salesmanship will, no doubt, say (spin) otherwise. WECK is now the station that cannot be trusted.

"Trust?" What trust? Listeners may trust WBFO or even WBEN aside from its heavily slanted talk shows, but WECK? It evokes as much "trust" as Jack or 97 Rock. It's a music station. Listeners just want to hear the songs. Now, if the DJs repeatedly announced Air Supply songs as the Beatles, maybe that would... nah.

Bottom line, it wasn't "Wee for a Wi." Nobody drank a gallon or water and died. Nobody "accidentally" blew up Delaware Park (remember when Channel 4 staged that fireworks debacle?) Nobody bungi-jumped off a (rusty) bridge and nearly strangled himself. It was just a "Fake Promotion." The president has told more than four thousand lies. By comparison, this was just a harmless bunch of words. Didn't monetarily or physically hurt a soul. A week from now, even the people who heard it won't give a fig. It's a "'meh' moment" ...made larger by an apology and ten people here writing about it.

"Buddy misled us. I'm never listening to WECK again." Said nobody, ever. Seems to me that he got a lot more notice out of this "debacle" than he would have by just announcing that he hired another "retired" sales guy from Entercom. Mission accomplished. The "mea culpa" simply extends the event and tries to generate a little more comment with a positive spin.

WRONG. It was an outright LIE. If Dick Bauerle was in fact a local radio legend, then it would have been a simple misrepresentation that would certainly be recognized before long. That will never happen in this case.

In that case he should have said he hired Steve Bannon instead of Steve Cichon.

Only if Bauerle is not his real name. Look...I get it...you're upset. But you're wrong.

The industry prints dull press releases every day. I see them all. This is a way of standing out and getting attention.

The only one who should be angry is Tom. And as far as I know, he hasn't complained.

Apparently, Tom did complain(on WBEN & Facebook). Very few people will know or even care about this incident. It won't help WECK get that elusive 4 share. Neil Young called it "Pissing Into The Wind"...

Kinda sounds like one or more of the Bauerle's may very well have been pissed about WECK's self-admitted "child-like" antics...

"Well, I would like to make a public apology. When I hired Dick Bauerle as a markteing executive at WECK, I put out a statement saying "Bauerle is coming to WECK." Dick and Tom knew nothing about this. While that is true, it was misleading. Tom Bauerle, host of a popular talk show on WBEN is Dick's brother and my friend. I thought using the Bauerle name was a funny tounge in cheek prank, but in retrospect, it was stupid on my part for not thinking of how such a misleading statement could cause rifts outside of my station realm. In my 20 years at WBEN, Tom was and always has been a gentleman to me, and helped me and mutual ad clients a great deal. I apoligize to our WECK listeners, and most of all Tom and Dick Bauerle for the child-like headline I posted. I hope we can get back to our respective micophones and create the wonderful entertainment that Buffalo radio has always delievered. Buddy Shula, Owner, Radio One Buffalo, LLC /WECK AM /FM"

I think it is clear that it is more likely than not that WECK is not overly adept at the nuances of hype/stunting. They need to find a former washed-up has-been professional hyper/stunter to bring on board. lol

Whatever. As I said, he's the only one who has the right to complain. The rest of you are just piling on. Unnecessary.

I'm not the least bit upset as it makes no difference in my life, but in the context of this discussion, it was a lie, pure and simple. Being the contrarian that you are, you cannot help yourself but disagree. We all know this.

Wrong! It was not an outright LIE- It was the total truth, but it was misleading.
