Stan Mikita dead at 78 years old

Chicago Blackhawks great Stan Mikita has died at the age of 78, the last three years he has had Lewy body dementia that has sadly effected all his memories with the Chicago Blackhawks. From 1958-1980 he played his entire career with the Chicago Blackhawks, something today players very rarely do play their entire career with one sports team, without any point either being traded, released, waived, or sign with a new team viva free agency. He also was one of the Chicago Blackhawks that had left the team, feeling unwanted and never would have thought he would ever be wanted by the team, and then when Rocky Wirtz unexpectedly took over the team, from his late father, he started to right his father's wrongs, that included putting all 82 Chicago Blackhawks games home and away on tv, and started welcoming back such former players including Stan Mikita back to the team, as team ambassadors. While it is sad of what happened to Stan Mikita in his last years, but let's still remember all his great years and the life that he did have. I will also imagine that either in the pre-season or home opener that the Chicago Blackhawks will have a moment of silence for the late Stan Mikita before the National anthem at the United Center.

Terrific player and one of the first to wear a helmet -- if not the first, then the biggest star to start wearing one. RIP, Stan, from an appreciative fan of the Big Bad Bruins.

I used to love to watch Mikita and his teammates of the day back in the late 60's/early 70's. They were an exciting team in an exciting league. Great memories.

I have done a Google search, and according to Wikipedia George Owen, of the Boston Bruins was the first to regularly wear a helmet in a game. And there is no mention at all of Stan Mikita wearing of being the first or one of them to regular wear a helemt in a game, and I am sure that this also has to be a sad day in the NHL.

And one of the lucky Chicago Blackhawks players to get to win a Stanley Cup, that hard to believe that it would take 49 years before another Chicago Blackhawks team would win another Stanley Cup, and siren then they have won even 2 more Stanley Cups

Stan Mikita was not only an outstanding hockey player, but a true gentleman. He will be missed.

Mikita was the greatest Blackhawk of all time. Bobby Hull forfeited that title when he jumped to Winnipeg and the WHA, although that was due to Dollar Bill and Dollar Daddy being too cheap to keep him.

But eventually Hull did come back to the Blackhawks with Stan Mikita, and wasn't he too cheap to keep a lot for players as well?
