Have the Karams Gone Too Far? Ric Oliveria Ousted from WSAR!

I was shocked to hear that 1480 WSAR has gotten rid of longtime Manager and highly rated broadcaster Rick Oliveria. Rick was super talented on the air and saw WSAR through so many changes that I can't believe they expect to survive without him.

Especially because he does so much for the community and his band MAGIK SQUIRREL is a top rated Reverb Nation band with many awards including being a top million MTV band to its credit.

Things really have fallen apart on the station. Does anyone know where Rick is going next? The guy is a legend and some station should scoop him up before the competition does.

There is no loyalty in radio and Rick will probably be better off now. WSAR's audience is going to stay the same no matter who they hire. They are at the far right end of the AM dial and have never been a ratings powerhouse. They have a few loyal sponsors that keep that place from collapsing. Those sponsors will continue to be there no matter what. The station won't do any better or any worse without Rick. It's still all going to stay the same. I wish him well.

I think you've got this completely nailed!

After all, the Karams own the only two radio stations licensed to Fall River. This gives WSAR a de-facto monopoly on the local radio audience in Fall river and the surrounding area. 1400 certainly does not compete.....especially since they broadcast in Portutguese, and I think it's hardly likely that anyone would bother tuning in to 1420, since they're likely to be New Beford-centric.

And.....besides all that.....I've always had the impression that the Karams ran WSAR as their own personal toy to play with, and to show favoritism to whomever they pleased.

WSAR will remain just as it is until The Second Coming....or the Karams run out of money....whichever comes first:D

There’s nothing like WSAR talk to make this board come alive again!
Well......Now that Frank Battaglia and Steve White are no longer on this mortal coil........and for that matter, WALE itself.......and Francis Battaglia still out in Phoenix at KFNX......and John DePetro in a kind of exile, howling away on the 1 1/2 lung WNRI, It's becoming increasingly difficult to find targets to lampoon.

You might think of the Karams as "The Last of the Low-Hanging Fruit":D

One thing is for sure, the number of listeners has probably dropped dramatically since Ric left the air. He was the number one rated talk host in the Southcoast and a icon of the community. Especially with all the community work he did like inventing festivals and promoting music. If anyone knows what station he is going to be on I think we deserve to Know. Once thing is for sure the radio will not be the same without the most Dangerous man on the Southcoast bringing us under reported news.

I don't know if they have loyal sponsors. Most of them are connected in business to the owners in one way or another. The smaller places are usually friends of the ad people with Happy Hec getting most of the big accounts and making real money.

The Karams are nice people but to fire a talent like Rick Oliveria I don't think the station will survive as he was the only talented person on the station and put his heart and soul and entire being into the job. He is a very educated man and has written a book about his time as a wartime corespondent and is a champion of the people. He also is a talented singer and songwriter and his band MAGIK SQUIRREL has won many regional and national contents for music as well as providing arts to the youth.

OK I didn't want to say it.... but I'm going to say it. I'll bet $1 that "Rad1oh" is Rick. I think that was a pretty easy one to figure out. Anyone else want to chime in on this????

P.S. The station has been in business since 1923. To say that it won't survive because of one person is kind of crazy. They were fine before Rick and they'll be fine now too. Hec is the star of that station and even when he's gone the station will still survive. There isn't a single person on that station who isn't replaceable. Yes certain people will be missed, but the station won't die. NBC didn't die when Johnny Carson quit. CBS didn't go out of business when Letterman left. WSAR's tower certainly will not crumble because Rick Oliveira isn't on anymore.
