Live Performance This Friday on KROQ.....HD2!

Yes, Entercom has taken the one of the most unique aspects of Alternative Rock (and Mainstream Rock) Radio, the live performance of either a well known, or up and coming band or artist (In tomorrow's case, Brit Alt Rocker Bishop Briggs). They have now kicked it from the main stage and into the small lounge!! Desperation move to justify have a music HD2 station in the first place?

Cali....Are you saluting or berating? My POV is:
* this is an on-air broadcast exposure for an alt rock band. That is good
* this is showing love to their HD-2 signal. That is good
* this is being promoted on their primary on-air channel. That is good
.....and hopefully it will be recorded and archived and available as a podcast stream after it airs live. That will be good

Totally agree! I think Cali saying "kicked it from the main stage" is not a salute haha

No that's not correct. Every festival I've been to has a main stage and at least one up & coming stage. That's what this is.

Truthfully, with artist support, I could easily see an entire HD channel of nothing put live performances.

Which will get not even tens of listeners. Radios are useless for live performances, and live performances (with some very limited exceptions) do not translate to radio.

The KROQ of the 80s subchannel gets far more listeners for sure; on occasion, including me.

There are definitely exceptions for live performances.

At Emmis' Mega 98.3 in Buenos Aires, a classic Argentine rock station, we had "Megaacoustics" on average twice a week in the 11:30 to 12 Noon period. Short set, usually 5 to 7 songs, acoustic, and a limit of one song from the "new album" to avoid stiffs.

It was promoted several days in advance each time, and the ratings spiked in that hour always.

Artists were invited to participate (an idea I stole from the Grand Ole Opry) and we only picked superstars. They were the local equivalents of everyone from Jefferson Airplane to U2 (we covered five decades of Argentine rock and promoted that fact).

Fortunately, we had a "green room" that we set up with all the proper mikes and gear for these shows, and the room had the right acoustic treatment.

The success was having only the biggest superstars... the A list of the format... on the shows. Most of the artists allowed and signed releases for recording and use at later times of the songs played on the show. We put a number of acoustic cuts in the programming on Sunday evening, extending the impact.

This contrasts with our attempt to do a new talent show on Sunday evenings, playing recordings of unreleased artists from the market or first release new artists. That dug a hole in the Sunday numbers that you could have hidden the Obelisk in so we stopped that quickly and started playing our growing collection of recordings of the live acoustic songs by big artists.

Sure, heavily advertised one-off special performances by A-List superstar acts would qualify for one of the limited exceptions to which I referred. But that is not what was discussed above. Having a bunch of "up and coming" acts play the (mostly) stiffs off of their latest album 24/7 won't even support an HD sub-channel.
